When a large enough object strikes the Earth, the impact will change the Earth's orbit, punch a nice deep hole, and release plenty of magma. It will also blow enough debris and ash into the atmosphere to choke out anything alive. The waters will become like liquid concrete when it begins settling.
A larger object will cause the atmosphere to sheer off, allowing solar radiation to burn the surface for hundreds of years, until sea life can regenerate it... if sea life survives.
