EA and Codemasters have announced Grid Legends as part of today's EA Play Live event. The latest in the racing series, Grid Legends mixes classic racing gameplay with live-action story segments.
With a heavier emphasis on story than previous Grid games, Grid Legends casts you as the underdog racer taking part in the Grid World Series. With a rival in the form of the Ravenwest team, this is a much more cinematic racing game than we're used to from Codemasters and shares common ground with the 2015 reboot of Need for Speed, which also featured live-action story cutscenes.
Those FMV-style story segments will feature actors such as Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa and have been created using XR, the same technology used during the production of The Mandalorian.

As for gameplay, there's a wide range of vehicles - supercars, big rigs, open wheel .etc - and with a new race creator you can choose what you want to race at any time, rather than being locked into pure tarmac racing. The Grid World Series will take your story across locations such as London, Moscow, and Strada Alpina.
There will be over 130 routes, including real-life tracks and iconic GRID city circuits. Over 100 vehicles will be up for grabs as well. Basically, Codemasters is offering racers more of everything this time around.
We last saw Grid in 2019, which offered "fun, fast-paced racing into an easy-to-digest format" according to our review. That was released before EA's takeover of Codemasters, and so Grid Legends will be the first in the series under EA's oversight. Codemasters' first EA game is F1 2021, which we said is "the best-looking and most customizable installment" in the series to date.
