Harsh irritation with Stainless Steel

I have been struggling with SS316L for the past few weeks. Every coil I make ends up giving me a harsh irritation in the back of my throat. It's small, but eventually becomes too painful to vape.

I've tried dry burning (at low wattage, to a dull orange), not dry burning, cleaning with dish soap, 99% alcohol, and distilled water, but no matter what, I end up with this irritating bite at the back of my throat that ultimately becomes too harsh to vape.

I really want steel to work because I love temperature control. The exact same build on the same deck (SMOK TFV12 Prince RBA) with kanthal, with the exact same juice and cotton, produces a warm, smooth vape with no problems. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Jes

What ohm are you building at?

If you are doing the exact same number of wraps with SS as with kanthal, the resistance will be much lower on the SS than kanthal, making a hotter vape

And welcome to VU

Some people, like me, and a couple others at least on this forum, and maybe you, are allergic to Nickel - there is a small amount of nickel in Stainless Steel. Over time, I also get irritaton and eventually pain and illness from vaping stainless steel. Nichrome is way worse and starts causing pain sooner (much more nickel)

Stick to kanthal!

Thanks for the welcome, Lucy!

I usually shoot for around .25 - .40 Ohms. My most recent build is a dual coil at .262 Ohms, vaping at around 450 F, 60 Watts.

Thanks!
Jes

Yah, I've heard that some people have a reaction to SS and nichrome. I just didn't know if that 'reaction' was this back-of-the-throat irritation. Thanks for the response.

Word of warning, it tends to get worse over time :( used to just give me a tickle and random coughs a couple years ago, now it leads to full-blown sore throat, fever, and body aches if I keep vaping over a few days. Stinks.

SS makes me short of breath and very queasy. Oddly enough, I have no aversions to nichrome, but stainless makes me pant like I'm having a panic attack.

i can't use SS either

titanium is good for TC, but not if you want triple fused clapton etc, just straight wire
