Help making tricore coils that don’t twist

I can make dual core fused Claptons just fine and ordered the 28g core Patino alien makers to make a tricore fused Clapton but every time I go to make the coil it doesn’t stay flat it turns into a Mohawk. The cores seem flat after wrapping. What could I being doing wrong? Any suggestions are welcome, TIA

the only thing i can think to suggest is to try more tension on your spool so the clapton wraps are tighter. theres a fine line between too loose (wraps slide off or they dont secure your cores properly) and too tight (your cores twist up/triangle, or your swivels bind up while you are wrapping). as you apply more tension, keep watch on your cores and pinch them with nylon pliers/tape wrapped pliers to flatten out if they start to react badly (and reduce your tension a tiny bit until it stops trying to twist/triangle).

I just got a set of the 28 patinos the other week. I don't have any issues but now I use all of them. 1 against the drill Chuck and one against the swivel. Then just space the rest out. But i work up to the first block from the drill side and then just let the spool push the patino along the wire instead of moving them manually.

Do you mean it's flat after you clapton them, but triangles when you turn the wire into a coil? You could try gripping the end of the finished tricore clapton with pliers while wrapping, and keep good tension on the wire you've begun winding on your jig with your thumb while keeping tension on the end of the stick with the pliers

Thank you this is exactly what I mean. Okay I’ll try this

I hope you get it man. I love mine. I don't make aliens yet so the triple core fc is my go-to.

I was gifted a pair, but gave them to another builder. I honestly think that drawstring clasps work much better. The smaller the better.

Don't let that detour you. Multi core fused Claptons with 3 or more cores are IMO much harder to wrap and get to lay just right than aliens.

Aliens for some reason allow more support to the cores, coupled with the fact that you already being very delicate and not using much pressure helps make the alien much more stable to wrap.

Learn the "No-Stretch" method. But first learn how to under stretch just a hair and use that tension. I get better consistency and tighter wraps using that method.

I'm no alien King, I'm learning like you.

The best piece of advice I can give you is don't ever psych yourself out. Don't look at how hard a build is. Ever.

I can pretty much build any thing I want with the exception of alien staggs. And with a little practice I could build those.

1. Be consistent. Consistency is key to a good build
2. Don't work ahead of your skill level. Don't go trying a 30 ply staple coil and give up because you don't know a thing about working with ribbon wire for example.
3. Learn to Clapton, and then fuse Clapton in your sleep.
4. Prep needs to be a+ everytime. If your going to build it, take your time and do it right. If it's worth building, it's worth building right.

Take your time, ask questions, and branch out.

Build within your limits but always be pushing those limits.

Thank you kindly. Since I’ve mastered double core wanted to try and get more flavor with the tricore, alien’s aren’t what I’m going for.
