OK, I've read on the other forum about steeping in an oak barrel, with positive results. I happen to have some toasted oak chips for homebrewing on hand, so I'm giving this a shot:

120 ml

5% Inawera dark for pipe

20pg/80vg, 4 mg/ml

a few grams toasted oak chips

OK, so after a few days I noticed the juice is a bit darker than it normally would be without the chips. Looks like the oak's working it's magic :D

OK update:

I cracked and tasted at 5 days in, then at 8 days in. The oak's taking it's time working on the mix, but it's there (keep in mind this mix is 20/80 pg/vg, so it's gonna be slow). The tobacco's more up front, with the rum and brown sugar mingling in about mid way. It's definitely not as sweet as it normally is at a week in, and the oak is there, almost like I'm actually smoking out of a pipe. I'll update again in another week, might be filter time by then. Stay tuned!

OK update on the oak experiment:

Tasted it this morning, and WOW! This tastes just like a nice pipe tobacco, with a bourbon/rum finish. I think tomorrow I'll pull it off the oak and get it in bottles. IMHO the experiment was a success, and will definitely be repeated!

Since the oak attributes, like with homebrew, are going to fade...well I would only pull off what amount I might use in the next week or 3.

Perhaps, like with bourbon manufacture, a variation of temperatures over time might extract a different (better?) flavor. Something to think about maybe....

UPDATE:

Got it strained, filtered, and jarred. I think I lost about 10ml or so to tasting and the devil's cut. Definitely put the tobacco in the forefront, got a nice rum/brown sugar/bourbon taste throughout, definitely not as sweet on the exhale. The oak did the trick, and I'll be doing this again for sure!

I'm thinking so. I probably could have left it on another week or two as well, due to the high VG content, but it's right where I like it ;). I'm most definitely repeating this with a few more tobacco flavors. Might also get a good custard recipe in there as well ;)
