Start with the polite approach. Explain that pets can be exposed to nicotine through direct ingestion, second-hand aerosol or smoke, and potentially through residues that settle on surfaces. You can also point out that the health risks of cigarette smoking and second-hand smoke are much better documented in animals than many people realize. If they are still not convinced, I would recommend improving one of the following three skills: karate, capoeira, or judo. Preferably for personal development purposes only, of course.
