How do box mods affect quality of vape? Or don't they?

It seems to me any apparatus would perform as well as the next as long as they have the same chip. However, I've heard and experienced that different box mods produce different experiences. Some are better and more enjoyable than others. Can someone more savvy with building mods and electricity please explain? Or am I just nuts? Thank you!

You have asked a whole lot in that short little paragraph. I'm going to hope you are referring to unregulated box mods. They are most notably distinguished by the voltage drop. The less voltage lost to connections, the more voltage you have available to actually fire your coils. Most DIY builders make this type of box. Do a search here on mosfets to get some electricity type discussion on building.

If you are asking about regulated boxes ... you are still looking at how voltage is delivered, but there is a forest full of trees and each one represents a different approach to delivering that voltage. You can look up pulse width modulation, or temperature control, or buck, or boost or ... to start your way into understanding what the different chips can do to cause different vaping experiences.

Good question @Tasty Heights. A lot of regulated mods are not as satisfying to people used to instant ramp up of power from mechs. But there are good regulated mods that have very quick power ramp up and have the added advantage of lots of safety features and a really good regulation of power that mechs don't have. You just have to try a few regulated mods to see what does the job for you.

I think vapers that have never tried a mech will be very happy with most regulated mods, but those that are used to mechs, whether tube or box mechs, will spend a lot of time finding a regulated mod that give a very good "hard hitting" experience that they enjoy.

That being said, the biggest advantage of a good regulated mod to me is consistent power from a freshly charged battery to the last vape before the battery is dead before needing a charge. I really don't like the way mechs quickly lose their punch as the battery voltage drops off and doesn't deliver a satisfying vape. With a mech I have to change batteries quite often to keep the performance level high. Generally by the time a mech reaches 3.8 or 3.9v I change the battery because the punch is gone and the vape quality diminishes.

So for me, I much prefer a quality regulated vape. But it takes a bit of research to find one that is going to deliver a very good vape experience. Many regulated mods just deliver a lackluster experience with firing delays and slow ramp up times. Try to visit some local vape shops and try a few before buying if you can, with your favorite atty. It will save you money in the long run to try before you buy.

Dual battery regulated mods with boards like the SX350 and raptor 20 and 40 amp can ramp up faster than a single 18650 mech and provide a consistent vape.
I have a shelve of mech's that I rarely use now. Two years ago thats all I used.

This and how well they regulate the current in the pulse of modulation.

Thank you everyone. Thank you Drone. So Drone-what are some high quality mods you might suggest? Hana? Vaper Flask? Hex Ohm, Vapor Shark? Ivebeen following Mike High Mods and they look bad*ss but hard to get. Well built, usa built, nice chip, "industrialized mods". Sounds pretty awesome. So for best taste I'll plan on getting high quality reg box mod and a quality sub ohm tank. Makes sense, I just wondered if a iStick could ever hang in performance with like a Hana. But people paid for aesthetics and structure strength. Thank you!!

@Tasty Heights , I agree with @Scuba-Matt that the SX350 line of chips is very, very good. The Raptor chips are excellent also, but unlike the SX350 line lack most of the safety protection features. If you use a Raptor based mod you need to be fairly advanced and understand battery technology, coil building safety, etc. Not that their bad, but certainly require a little more advanced knowledge than the SX350 line, which has all the safety protections built in. But both choices will ramp up power very quickly. Most Raptor based mods are not as feature rich as SX350 based mods, but they are usually quite a bit cheaper and that might be appealing.

If you want to give temp protected vaping a try, I currently prefer the SX350J chip over the competition. But that may change with the DNA200 being released tomorrow. By looking at the specs the DNA200 might be the next big thing in vaping. I've got 2 boards coming later in the week, so I'll just have to see how it turns out. I'll just say I'm hopefully optimistic at this point, but there have been too many disappointing mods that have come out to want to say for sure this boards gonna be the shit.

My advice would be wait a week and start watching the reviews and feedback on the DNA200 mods. It would really suck to get an SX or Raptor mod and find out that for about the same money you could have had a DNA200. And maybe the DNA200 will suck... don't really know yet. But based on the spec sheet a week of waiting might be in your best interest.

I honestly found that hanging around this forum, you can keep pretty up-to-date on things. We are full of reviewers, knowledgable veterans and vape company owners. Members and staff are very informative and we keep each other informed about the when, where and how's in vaping.

IMHO, you all seem to have missed one of the greatest benefits that most box mods offer.

Unlike Tube Mods, for the most part when you sit them upright on a table or other flat surface (even with a topper attached) they stay where you set them!

If I ever let the SXMini M out of my hand I'll have to give that a try :)

Gonna second and thirded the sx350 chip with or without the temp limiting really is one of the more satisfying vapes I've had.
I've tried one WIth the okl20 and that's another great performer and a great vape! but i still prefer the sx. At least for now. All things vaping are subject to change. Haha.
