One of the most bittersweet aspects of Star Wars: The Last Jedi is how much it sets up for General Leia Organa to do. The princess-turned-Resistance leader is a huge part of the movie but, according to everything we know, will not appear in the sequel.
Though Carrie Fisher was initially intended to have a bigger role in Episode IX than she did in Episode VIII, her death in 2016 means that Leia isn't slated to be in the final film in this new Star Wars trilogy. Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy even confirmed that the script for Episode IX was rewritten following Fisher's death so that Leia will not appear.
