i might have only started wrapping coils just a short time ago, but i've been preparing and practicing for 50 years. let me try and explain..........
i've always been fascinated with knots wrapping and cordage. from a kid with a wrapping a piece of string around my finger (or anything else for that matter), to tying fishing flies. i've been doing the latter for 15yrs off and on. this has lead to me possessing well tuned fine motor skills. making micro adjustments in positioning is second nature for me.
i'm blind as a bat, and use whatever device needed in the moment to see what i need to see. my arsenal consists of: 3 pairs of reading glasses, a light/mag glass combo, a jewellery headband (worth it's weight in gold), and really good lighting. i also work with a black background on my bench for better contrast. being able to see the details of my work, makes it easier to figure out problems faster.
patience. slow and steady wins the race. i'm still in the learning phase. it takes me hours to do a new to me set-up. i take all the time in the world to get my foundations solid before i even attach my wrap wire. then...... i try and make every wrap count. there is no point in running the drill at 1000 rpm to end up with junk. i learn how to do it right, before i try to do it fast.
i've found my own style. for pattern X, i'll watch Y number of videos. each builder will have just something different from the others in technique, even though they are all tying the same pattern. i take all of this, and have added a few of my own shimmy and shakes (20 yrs as a tool maker), to develop my own groove.
i have all the respect in the world for every person that has come before me in this craft. this is not easy stuff to do, especially in the finer gauges. there is no way in hell, i would be the builder i am today, if it wasn't for those that had shared their knowledge freely. i think that the Alien will be the last complex build freely shared openly though. the boys have spoken loud and clear with the 'hellfire gargoyle hoof coil' video. in all fairness though, if you are at that level of the game (Aliens etc) hopefully you might have been able to figure out something new; or become good at deconstructing coilporn pics, lol.
anyways that's all the rambling that this old man has got to say. time to go crank some tunes and wrap some wire.
P.K.
