Is everyone sub-ohm vaping?

While reading way back on page 1 or 2, I had a realization... I didn't choose sub-ohm vaping. It chose me.

If those old-school sticks with cartomizers would have been cheaper and had enough power, I would have gladly stuck with them. I think back maybe 5 years while looking at this thing I'm I'm currently vaping off, and I have to laugh. Trying to get enough smoke-free nicotine in my system seems like way too much work sometimes, when you consider what the old setups were.

I picked up my first e-cig at a deli in Manhattan. A tiny cartomizer with the highest nicotine possible. I took a couple drags and got dizzy. It was awesome.

Of course, the battery died almost immediately. Every upgrade since as been to improve performance and save money. If you told me in 2010 I'd be making my own juice and vaping off of something with two 18650 batteries, I wouldn't have believed it. Spending hours on a forum trying to figure out temperature control and kantal/nickel/nichrome/titanium and juggling ohms law? Ha. A couple more months and we'll be vaping off boxes with an operating system, bluetooth and the Internet of Things. The camera/laser combo will measure cloud distances and automatically post them somewhere. The only thing that will stay the same is the stink-eye you'll get for vaping in public.

I use the best equipment I can find to ensure my health. It costs so little. It's immense fun & a joy to learn. I just read & learn about vape gear. It's a fascinating hobby.

Technology is so funny. I get all my TV through my WiFi connection (seriously, who wastes money on cable these days?) I mean I watch TV on my TV, but with an internet connection. And I inhale cereal flavored nicotine with the assistance of a computer chip (not right at this moment specifically but I will have my first regulated mod on Monday) that is powered by what basically amounts to a flashlight battery (the battery powered part is true, 18650 mech right now). It just makes me giggle a bit when I think about it like that.

I adjust to new technology. Still prefer a manual transmission over automatic. My Cell phone runs my TV. I'm just glad I'm smart enough to make all this work.

I've spent so long trying to force myself into that mindset. This is drudgery sometimes. But DIY is right up my alley, in a big way. It makes no sense.

My thought is that if I push harder for a while, and get caught up with the technology (again), something will finally click. I already did that with juice: I have all the product, the recipes, the ratios... it's brainless now.

Some people are drawn to new things. Some are not. I try to grasp things that might make my life better. Most things I get, some I don't. :)

Why I'm sub-ohm:
(I'm using a wrap calculator for this, and speaking in broad terms to avoid a number dump.)

I drip on a dual coil atty. If I want to stick with 1 ohm, I can use 32 gauge Kanthal, 5 wraps, no problem. But 32 gauge is too thin. For 28 gauge, I'd need 13 wraps.

I picked up some 26 gauge recently to experiment. One ohm would have been 20 wraps. Woah. I ended up dropping below .5 ohm just to get a workable coil. I also have a Subtank Mini with braided Kanthal... 0.5 ohm.

So like I joked earlier, sub-ohm "chose me." I guess I could try different combinations of ohms and watts to determine the best vaping experience, but I vape simply to keep from smoking analogs. It's utilitarian.

By the way, I started off on analogs by rolling my own, no filter. The head rush in the morning was so intense, I'd have to make sure I was sitting down. I vape way too much now, but at least I can breathe. And jog. And wake up feeling relatively healthy.

The only sub-ohm vaping I've tried, so far, is
  • The vaping gear at two LVS', where the owner(s) let me try their gear. Since I'm a MTL'er: Good taste, but way too airy
  • The Ni TC .15Ω that came installed in my Eleaf GS-Tank. Vapes with the 1.5Ω tasted much better, so I stuck with that.
That being said: I'm really interested in trying an RTA. I'm thinking perhaps my own builds, in the right RTA, whether they end-up sub-ohm, on-or-near the bubble, or supra-ohm: I might get even more satisfactory vapes.

What I do know I don't want: Direct inhale and massive clouds.

Adjust the airflow, shut it off or something
This gets back to the mechanics/physics of how vaping devices work. (Discussed, in passing, in another thread in which we both participated.)

You see it all the time: "My vapes tasted burned." "I'm getting dry hits." "I get gurgling." "My tanks leaks." "I want more cloudz." "I want less cloudz, bro." Other than improper wicking and the like: All of these things boil down to the amount of liquid vs. air flow vs. energy applied (heat). Just shutting down the airflow won't necessarily work. So the question becomes: Can an RTA be run such that you can get the dynamics balanced (so no flooding, no dry hits/burning), and the flavour you want, and not-too-massive clouds? I suspect the answer is: Yes, you can. @Shark Vape has done it with his Goblin Mini. I'm going to try it with an OBS Crius, I think.

I sub ohm vape for the nicotine hit..clouds are a by product of that hit..lol

It's true. If I was forced to cut down on clouds, I'd have to massively reconfigure my setup and step up to 24mg juice. I didn't even realize how crazy my clouds were until my wife mentioned it once. I never even noticed. [Edit: I just checked. My clouds aren't THAT crazy. But I can see how a non-vaper would do a double-take.]

I'm down to 3mg juice now, due to the efficiency I seem to be achieving with a .3 ohm build and higher wattage.

Heck: I showed my wife a vape from my 1.5Ω coil at 20W and she thought that was a lot. I think maybe sometimes vapers don't realize just how much cloud they're exhaling.

Not a good gauge, really. Same thing happened when my wife and I walked into one. We were expecting to hear bells and fog horns any moment.

I sometimes wonder what people in vape shops think about customers who walk in with pens and tiny clouds. You can tell a lot of them go for huge plumes because it makes them look more knowledgeable.

Side note here: The last 6 months I was in Manhattan, the good vape shops all had a massive turnover for some reason. (I live in the country now.) Suddenly, a lot of the employees I talked to could only answer questions about what they were selling. Price of hardware/taste of juices/etc. I would appreciate it if someone could confirm something here... That if you're making your own juice, rebuilding disposable attys, carefully using ohms law and keeping a set of tools solely for vaping, you're in the 1%.

It's a little different out here on the West Coast. The shops I visit here in San Diego don't even sell pens..or recommend them to a newbie..
My favorite shop has grown in leaps and bounds the past two years..they have a lounge, tasting bar and custom mix my juice on the spot...I guess the closest thing they sell to pens is VW single batt mods like the Vamo or Lavatube...they do offer a good line of high powered box mods, RDA's, subtanks and accessories..they also carry a few mechs...same three guys still there after two years now...

Of all the vapers at work, only myself and another don't use eGo setups, and none make their own e-liquid or are even on vape forums. They vape to quit smoking, not as a hobby or sport...

It's a little different out here on the West Coast.

I hit one vape shop when I was in Venice about a year ago. Nice setup, smart guy. But I noticed a lot more people around the corner lining up to get prescriptions for p0t.

I have to make sure I'm not using the term "pens" too loosely. I even call my wife's Kanger ipow2 a pen. We found a vape shop about a half hour from us which is has the couch/tasting setup and their own line of juice. It's soooo nice walking in there not seeing cigalikes for sale. I'd have to go back to remember what their "low-end" stuff is. Lavatube-type stuff sounds about right.

I do see eGo-type setups a lot. Kanger Mini Protanks.

Yup that's how the vape shops around here are. That said, in my experience most people out there vaping don't get that into it. Most people I know just pick up stuff at their local smoke shop. And, a smoke shop and a vape shop are very different. Most people I see vaping have some sort of pen, I could probably count on my hand how many times I've seen someone with a solid box mod. I know lots of the smoke shops have gotten some sort of starter sub-ohm setup though and that's what they push now. Something like the Kanger starter set or the Aspire Atlantis set. Two of my friends have the Atlantis, where my brother and a couple of his friends have the Kanger they all got from just smoke shops. They're all happy with them. But I think we all know that the difference between those and something like a Sigelei box with a higher end tank like TFv4 or crown is quite a jump. I have the TFv4 and hit it at 110w+ generally, and when I hand it off to them to try they start coughing :D.

Anyways, I in my experience there are those that vape and those that make a hobby out of it. Those I know that have made a hobby out of it are all subohm with either RDA's or RTA's (or both) and those that haven't are generally still using Pens, and a few in those Kanger starter kit type setups, yes still subohm but again there's a pretty big difference between that and those that have made a hobby out of it.

Anyways, I'd bet the majority of vapers out there are using some sort of pen mod with >1ohm coils, or possibly some starter set but even those likely ~1ohm coils. It's only the more passionate people that have pushed into subohm and those are the people you actually hear talk about it, which is why it may seem like more do that.

I agree with everything you said,
Dynamics are so simple though IMO..
I still have RTA's in rotation, the aqua v2 and the silver play, sold my 2 goblins here..
RTA's are just PIA IMO
but if that's something you will enjoy

I'll never know until I try :)

If the builds are easy and the results consistent and consistently trouble-free: Then I can see sticking with it. If it turns out to be too fiddly: Then I probably won't. That's one reason I've decided to forgo the Coil Master, for now, and build my own coil-wrapping tools out of a couple spare 5/64" and 3/32" drill bits (1.98mm and 2.38mm, respectively) and some wooden dowel rods I have laying around.

I'm a bit north of you if you're in San Diego (closer to LA) and last weekend at a party there were 3 other people vaping, all with pens. My roommates daughter vapes as well, but sticks to her pen (I offered one of my old mods, but she wanted to stick to the pen because it fit better in her purse). Of course this is all anecdotal evidence with limited sample sizes, but I just see pens far more often than box mods, like I said I can count on one hand the amount of times I've seen a solid box mod, I do see the Kanger boxes a decent amount now though but I guess I just see those as closer to pens than box mods. Again though, that's just my experience. I see lots of women with pen mods, and then a handful of kanger type starter sets, and a very rare mech mod or solid box mod.

@vuJim I've also gotten my TFv4 to work closer to my old pen mods. The best setup I did was 1.2Ω single coil around a 3.5mm rod I think it was, I sat it really close to the airflow to restrict that a bit, then turned the airflow really tight. Not perfect but it was something I was playing with for a while. Still kind of a side project that I'll be picking back up at some point.

EDIT: Saw your comment about the coilmaster, I know it helped a ton making that high ohm coil, I needed to get 10 wraps, which wouldn't have been easy if I was hand wrapping, but simple with the coilmaster.

Hmmm... Maybe I'll check the stores for a 7/64" (2.77mm) drill bit, for cheap, and build one of those, too.
