John Waters has been expressing his disdain for superhero movies, claiming they are little more than “science projects” that are made by computers.
The Hairspray helmer was recently in London for a career retrospective at the British Film Institute, where we took the opportunity to ask him about the genre.
“I don’t really go and see the superhero movies I’ll be honest with you” he explained. “They look like science projects. They’re not movies, they’re science projects – computers made those movies!”
The self-styled ‘Pope of Trash’ does have a soft spot for one hero however…
“I guess I liked Superman. I can identify because when I don’t have my moustache I’m powerless. If I forget to shade it when I leave the house and I look in a mirror I have to rush to a phone box and put it on and I feel powerless without it, so I can identify with Superman in that way. And Batman I liked because I always thought he and Robin maybe… you know… But that would have been paedophilia and I can’t be for that.”
