Diacetyl in particular is a cause for concern, as it is commonly known to vapers as a cause of the dreaded “popcorn lung”. Popcorn lung causes irreversible damage to the lungs from inhalation.

What is alarming is some of brands that tested high for these harmful chemicals are some of the industries biggest names including Cuttwood with both DA and AP and Cosmic Fog with AP. Currently there have been no announcements or comments made by any of the companies listed that tested high for the above-mentioned chemicals.

Wow this is crazy

These things always open a can of worms
because people refuse to accept other people's opinions

There are no FACTS concerning the inhalation of AP and DA over the long term by means of vaping. We are going off information gathered for other purposes

Is Vaping huge amount sof DA and AP dangerous and cancer causing....quite possibly.

Is there a certain amount if inhaled daily that is safe...Maybe

We just dont know
those who say AP AND DA free liquids.. are airing on the side of caution.. good for them

those using DA AND AP may not believe the same thing as those who want to be AP and DA free liquids
are they wrong.... not if they are informed.

But what needs done is labeling of liquids with AP and DA and let consumers research and choose.

While I am not a chemist I do know a wee bit about Popcorn Lung.

I have been and industrial salesman most of my life and back in the day, one of my customers was a Popcorn Factory.

Thank GOD that I never had to spend much time on the factory floor but they did use a lot of Diacetyl in there product and this was before they really had a handle on the stuff and what it could do to you.

Lots cheaper than actual butter.

But I still remember that I could smell the "Butter" from the parking lot and non of the employees wore respirators.

And a lot of the folks on the production floor did actually come down with Popcorn Lung from breathing the stuff 8 hours a day, five or more days per week.

Heh.

I've been saying for a year that vapers and the "industry" are going to bring down the regulation onto themselves that they were working so hard to avoid by so called "self regulation".

The writing is on the wall. Buy your nic and flavors now for DIY juice or get a second job to pay the coming tax and fees for the limited choices that will be left when the do gooders get what they've pushed for.

I can always tell a propaganda piece by what isn't in it. No mention that smokers have been inhaling diacetyl with every puff and still no popcorn lung in a single smoker or anyone else that did not come directly from popcorn flavoring.

edit: A big shout out to @5150sick for these articles. I keep coming back to this forum for these.

well heres a thought
the first microwave popcorn didnt really start mass production until 1984
the first cases of popcorn lung from a popcorn factory started in 1990
SO it took 6 years for this to happen

now vaping has been around more then 6 years
we have heard of no cases o f popcorn lung in vapors yet.

i personally avoid the stuff just because I recognize it COULD be an issue, and there are ways to DIY without it.

But I feel vaping some DA on a daily basis is probably not going to lead to popcorn lung. But way too much probably will.

But how much is too much????? NO FUCKING CLUE

I am also smart enough to know, I do not know what other conditions and things that may have been present in the popcorn factory. Some or none could have caused the popcorn lung.

the point is
I dont fucking know

NOBODY REALLY DOES

But since we have found something that MAY POSSIBLY be an issue, the flavorings or ejuices with these things in it should be identified and people should be educated about the possible risks

Diacetyl has been present in cigarettes for many many years. No popcorn lung in a single smoker that didn't work in a popcorn flavor plant(or the one dude that got it from sniffing a shit load of microwave popcorn).

Vaping probably isn't safe but popcorn lung is very low on my list of concerns. 5ml a day of pg/vg seems to be the majority of what goes into my lungs. That's more likely to cause long term issues simply given quantity, me thinks. At least, for what I vape. I still do it.

Nobody knows what the real long-term effects are, BUT everybody should know that whatever those effects are they're exponentially less than if we'd continued smoking. Period.
http://blog.mtbakervapor.com/the-truth-about-diacetyl/

What? Oh, there's more diacetyl in cigarettes than the occupational exposure to 1980s popcorn workers (30 years ago people) that inhaled (without any kind of PPE) the exact same thing? In a fine powder form (and not in a vaporized liquid form)? I'd have popcorn lung from the amount of hot bags of popcorn smell I freebased straight out of the microwave.

Better yet standing in front of the microwave watching, and smelling, the popcorn pop before I snorted the butter smell like a c*caine addict HAD to have had some kind of detrimental effect on my health.

Yup. Is it all an elaborate plot by big-tobacco to renew their friendship with the legislators/congresspeople and get us all back on cigarettes?

I wrote about the Vaporshark test results in June:

http://vapingunderground.com/thread...yl-propionyl-ap-some-came-out-very-bad.94514/

The reason that there has never been a case of popcorn lung in a smoker is simple.
You have to do a lung biopsy (after death) to find popcorn lung.
That shit doesn't just show up in your bloodwork.

The reason the popcorn worker case is the only one you often hear about is because a bunch of non smokers died of COPD like, smoking related like symptoms and they all worked at the same place.

Scientists and doctors wanted to find the common denominator in these deaths.

They don't even really know if it WAS Diacetyl and they state it MAY have been the cause because it's just a theory that was unproven.

For all we know the popcorn plant workers may have huffed paint for fun???

Diacetyl is most likely the culprit.
99% chance it was but an unproven theory none the less.

A smoker gets COPD then lung cancer then dies they may have had popcorn lung and were misdiagnosed.
But who cares they were a "filthy smoker" and died because they were a "filthy addict" and another notch goes on the Smoking related death list.

If you smoke and you die no one cares about the correct reason
You died BECAUSE YOU SMOKED.
They aren't going to do an autopsy.
Why would they?

This is how our government thinks because is the people found out that smoking caused popcorn lung BEFORE they get their precious MSA money then the people may want their precious cash crop banned.

Let's be real, our country became rich and powerful when we slaughtered the Native Americans and stole their Tobacco idea, took it back to England and France then got them addicted to it.

That's just plain and simple history.
We want to grow something and get rich off of it because as a country that's all we know.
Aside from making automobiles that barely function properly. (and China even has us beat at that)

Now since our greedy governments cash crop is known to kill half it's users we push it to third world countries while we scramble to find something new that we can grow and get instantly rich on.

Enter MJ ... 75%+ of young Americans are cool with that "gold that grows from the earth"
Looks like money really does grow on trees and has all along.

Once these old refer madness dinosaurs die off it will be legal for recreational use in all 50 states.
I'd give it until around 2030 and it will be sold in packs behind the counter of every gas station in America.

@5150sick

really noone who has died from SMOKING has had an autoposy???

you being extremely naive or something
my mom hid the fact she had lung cancer form the family. me and my siblings were estranged form her for many years.
my sister INSISTED on an autopsy after she died.
you think noone who was in end stage lung cancer has been murdered?
plenty of heavy smokers have had autopsies and had lung biopsies.

99% chance it was DA

really????

how did you come to 99% if the doctors at best said it MAY have been the cause

plus we leave out the fact that they were inhaling DA DUST
we are inhaling it as VAPOR

is there a difference?? I DONT KNOW

theres too many unknown factors with popcorn lung

All I do know is there has been some evidence to SUGGEST DA in your lungs may be a bad thing

so I choose to reduce or eliminate it in my e juice

we are all grown ups
read the info
decide for your self
and ejuice companies need to be up front about that ingredient

Many scientists believe smokers have died from popcorn lung and it was misdiagnosed as COPD. I've heard Dr. F say it before on click bang radio show.
You are correct the diacetyl at the popcorn factory was dust which may be why they got it and smokers don't. So we agree why argue. I stated the government thinks "they died because they smoke" and don't want to lose their precious cash crop. That's all.
Could diacetyl kill us all? Maybe. Will it? probably not.
There is more diacetyl in cigarettes than eliquid.
Unless you are vaping one of the worst which just so happens to be the most expensive (5 pawns)

Good luck with that.

Diacetyl doesn't need to be added as an ingredient to be present in a juice. It's quite naturally ocurring and can become present at any stage of developement. These of course are very low levels but that's what the article calls for, testing for lower levels and zero tolerance.

Maybe we should call on all vapers to test their breathe as most of the population produces diacetyl in their mouths.

If I was a juice or flavor manufactuerer, the only claim I would ever make is, "NO DIACETYL ADDED". That way, I couldn't be called a liar when a trace of diacetyl is found in a juice weeks after I made it. ;)

Dr F has suggested that popcorn lung may have been misdiagnosed in smokers but there is zero evidence to back that up. And I strongly disagree with the no autopsy theory. As far as I'm aware, thousands of smokers lungs have been autopsied for many reasons, including lung disease from smoking. Surely, if popcorn lung was present in smokers with any statistical relevance, at least one would have shown up.
