Hey everybody,

I'm just getting into DYI liquids and until recently, I thought that everyone was making their flavors from scratch, which seemed like a huge pain in the ass (this is a big reason that it took me so long to get into this). I now know that most people are buying premade flavors, but I am curious if anyone is making flavors themselves. Like I said, I don't really have an interest in doing it myself, but I am curious as to how it's done.

If I go to the local farmers market and taste some really good blueberries and think to myself "Boy, I'd like to vape these!", is that an option?

Fruit isn't possible(too much sugar content).. but coffee, tea, tobacco and other herbals can be done.. :D

Good to know. I actually don't really like fruit vapes, but coffee and/or tobacco would be interesting.

Ive always wondered about this but with the fruits. I already make my own fruit extracts from alcohol for cooking. And presently been looking for a way to do this without pulling out the sugars (to make it vapable.)

I just started making my own tobacco extracts/macerations. Tobacco + PG, a warm bath, then filter. It has produced some excellent flavoring, and you only need ~3% in your mix. I've used the NET (Naturally Extracted Tobacco) in a couple mixes now, with other flavors, to great success.

I think I'm going to try coffee, and then hibiscus next. Not combined, mind you...Haha.

you will need a lot of equipment, a hooch factory just won't work.. :p

Due to a certain someone being a real pain in the ass with their negative nancy remarks lately...Ill let you find the extraction method on your own, I dont feel like battling a know it all, however, it is more than possible to make flavor extracts with fruit....
from everything I've read which has been pretty extensive, making extracts with fruit requires distilling which can be done but requires a lot of equipment. Fruits contain sugars which aren't good to use for vaping...

on a side note I don't know who or what your referring to but this remark isn't appreciated. Everyone is welcome to an opinion and it may not be your own but this site is becoming a wealth on knowledge without some of the negative side effects I have seen on other sites and I'd very much like to keep it that way thanks

Wow! 96 days 11 hours smoke free Celtic (it says that on your little ticker signature) My taster didn't work right for at least 6 months after quitting smokes. Your'e knowledge of DIY juice making must be enormous with all the dozens of minutes you have put in!

Mr. Fog, I've found some of your insight useful, so I'm not picking on you, but you have been acting a bit childish. Instead of being defensive, and reactionary, it would be more helpful to others if you would just share what you've learned, and stop being offended by things. Only those who are not comfortable with, and confident in, themselves feel the need to browbeat, bulldoze, and defend themselves so vehemently. I believe you can be a positive contributor here, so just put away the nonsense and contribute.

Im fascinated with the fact that your remarks that have nothing to do with the facts...you just turned into a pool of babbling goo trying to take the adult approach I guess...well karma gets them all in the end.

hmm.. still at it.. good thing I am still "ignoring".. can't believe I had to, but.. peace is better than arguing..

no, but the herbals are turning out more interesting thinking.. and they are not that hard to do..

look for heirloom seed companies and browse thru on the notes they have..
all you need is your choice of pg or vg and a bit of everclear or 151.. and a good soak..
little or more time, and you can have something nice and tasty.. :D

Just remember, if it is a sweet.. sugary.. avoid it. Your lungs can not process all the sugars, nor can you get rid of sugars without a ton of equipment.

herbs, tobaccos, coffees and teas are about as safe as you can get..

also.. if you do this.. watch out for:

mold
mildew
off tastes..

anything that has changed since you extracted.. remember.. when in doubt, toss it out.

Thanks Smoky B! Very interesting stuff. I might actually try to make a coffee and/or vanilla extract, seems easier than I thought it would be.

Damn, always a day late and a dollar short for all the drama. LOL! Anyways, Celtic I'd love to hear your method for extracting fruit. Some of the fruit flavorings available just don't do the real thing justice. So I'd love to try some extracts from real fruit!

I've done a coffee extrat using some Kona coffee from Mountain Thunder. Visited them on our honeymoon and it was the best damn coffee I've ever had. A bit on the pricey side but ohhh so good! The extract turned out amazing!!

Out of curiosity, has anyone extracted vanilla into pg or vg and then used said vanilla solution to extract coffee? Seems like it could have some interesting results (this may be the type of thing that I think is a good idea, but is actually terrible)

That makes sense to me, though the resulting extraction may be pretty thick. No reason NOT to give it a try..When I've done my tobacco extractions (all 2 of them, so I'm no expert), I just used PG, and let it macerate in a jar, in my car, in the summer heat for several days. The 2 I've done have been outstanding, IMO. I don't like the idea of using alcohol, since I'm no longer a "drinker". Not that it would necessarily have any effect at all, but for my mind's sake...

Makes sense with the alcohol. I know it's in some of the juices I buy from vendors, but if I'm making it myself, I would rather not put it in there. I think I'm going to try to extract using vg. From the links the Smoky B provided, it seems that it should work. In the end, I imagine the extract will be REALLY thick, but I'm ok with that since I plan to drip whatever I make anyway.

Citrus fruits can be done with method described here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/823937 You'd want to let a lot of the alcohol evaporate before using it as flavoring. Or search that page for "James Green" to find how you can make your own Grand Marnier (for drinking, not vaping). I am gonna do that one, including some peel from a bergamot orange, like the real stuff uses.

Citrus peals are fine.. any other parts of fruits.. I wouldn't attempt..
Unless you want sugar in your lungs. You have to have equipment to extract the flavor from the sugar..
I hear the equipment is costly.. but it's not worth my lungs to vape home made extracted fruits..
I like to live and breath, every once in a while. ;)

Simplest steam distillation method: http://www.care2.com/greenliving/rose-water-how-to-make-your-own.html?page=2
They're using rose petals, but that concept could be extended to other compounds that are volatile at relatively low temperature. The result would be very dilute, but it's using water, which could be easily boiled down. I've done this basic idea with mint leaves and stevia leaves (not for vaping, just for food flavorings), with reasonable results.

Interesting info here on vacuum distillation; check out the setup he's using, too: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/02/dining/02curious.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

ps - distillation is key; boiling stuff in liquid and using the liquid to vape is a bad idea because of the sugars and random detritus
