During the Olympic closing ceremonies in Rio, Japan's prime minister Shinzo Abe donned a Mario cap and came out of a warp pipe.
"Super Abe" took the stage in the part of the closing celebrations where the next host country for the games is introduced. In the climax of a video that saw Mario travelling to Rio from Japan, Abe emerged from the pipe holding a red ball and wearing Mario's signature cap. The ball was handed to Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Kosuke Kitajima after a video segment where a sizzle reel boasted the country's athletic - and technological - prowess.
