I love my mech mods, but I'm thinking about a box mod. Does vw help with things like not scorching some flavors? I don't wanna spend a ton of money on something I may hate. How much wattage would be a good place to start. I'm thinking I may not want a 150 watt box, I see a lot of people saying things like their sweet spot is in the 20 to 30 watt range anyway.

20-30 watts is ok for most rebuildable tanks. If you want to tap into the potential of a dual coil rda you'll need much more. The best do it all, variable power box right now is probably the Sigelei 100 watt plus. Enough power for any atty and dual batteries for good runtime. Get that one and you're done.

I'm definitely an RDA user. Haven't found a tank that I like. Thanks I appreciate it!

Depends how low are you building on a mech.
For super sub ohm 100W+
For moderate sub ohm 50W
If you don't sub ohm 20W+

That is pretty much spot on. Unless you're trying to chase little clouds, even 25-35 isn't bad with a .9-1.1ish coil. I like a .9 at 40w but we are all different. Anything lower than .8 and I am on the 50w train.

Like everyone else says it depends on how you like to vape and the builds you prefer.

Things to look at are:

Does the mod have step-down or what is the minimum output voltage? If there is no step-down, then you can't go lower than battery voltage so lower power builds will not be possible at some resistances. Having step-down improves the flexibility of the device.

What is the max output voltage? The higher the max voltage the higher the resistance the device will be able to deliver the wattage numbers. Most builds and factory atomizers are 2.0 Ohms or less so check the output voltage range against this value. Personally I think at least 8V is a good max output voltage for a flexible resistance range.

Coming from a mech where your output voltage range is very limited you will likely find that the wider voltage range of current box mods allows for greater flexibility in build resistance. Another reason to check the output voltage range. I was surprised how much easier it was to get good performance when I wasn't limited by battery output voltage.

Does the mod use pulse width modulation for any mode. Some use it for everything. Some use it only during step-down. Some never use it and provide DC all the time. DC all the time is preferred by most people.

Some box mods have a firing delay. Basically a delay from when you press the button to when it starts delivering power to the atomizer. Some always have it, some only have it if the screen is off, etc. No firing delay is preferred by most people.

Depends really. The Sig 100w+ is quite affordable nowadays and even if you feel that 100w is way too much, you don't have to use it at full blast.

Thanks everyone. You definitely gave me plenty to think about. Lots of good advice. I guess if I buy to small a device I'm just outta luck. At least if I get plenty of watts I can always turn it down. Go big or go home right.

Over buying wattage means you can tune it down... buying low you are limited when your tastes change.

my first variable device was a 11W, i wanted to upgrade to a 20W, but figured I would "over buy" with a 30W...next thing you know I wish I had a 50W...So I started looking and figured a 100W with dual 18650's would be better than buying a 50W with a single 18650. I also wanted a screwless magnetic battery door and spring loaded 510, so I figured I'd get a sig100plus...I ended up ordering a sig150, because I liked the way it looked better, as a bonus i got 50 extra watts.

I couldn't be happier with it. I mostly run my subtank/atlantis at 22-30W and most drippers at 38-50W, i rarely go over 50W...but its nice to have it

So one thing I was wondering about, will vaping at lower wattage keep from scorching liquids? Some of my favorite flavors burn extremely quick in a dripper on a mech mod.

Numerous things come into play... how well the wick can keep up with the evaporating liquid, the air flow over the coils as well as how high the power is set at. In addition a single coil or a leg that gets too hot will make it appear as if the juice is burning or not when in fact it is just that one location that is causing it.

There are so many variations of high wattage box mods being pumped out of China, you really wont need to spend a ton of money; unless of course you are considering something authentic out of the states, but to just see if you like regulated or not, I think China mods will do you just fine.

Just give it a go, you might like what you find, or you might not. I ended up going back to using mechanical devices after using a variety of regulated devices for about a year ;)

I was in your exact position just a couple months ago. I did a ton of research and asked a lot of people on here. I finally decided to go with the Sigelei 150W and have been loving it ever since! Only device I use now!

Now I know you said you didn't want something that goes that high but hear me out... One of the biggest pro's I have had with this is the battery life. Runs on two 18650 batteries and I can go two days without taking them out to charge, if I'm running on low wattage. Secondly, depending on the resistance, or ohms, of your build you have so many more options with how warm you want to vape. I've had builds that I've had to run on 25 watts and I've had builds that I've had to run on 90 watts. It's just nice to have that extra potential and opens up your options. Thirdly, it's nice to have that LED screen to tell you where you battery life is, wattage, voltage, and ohms on your build. Really convenient! I can tell you that you will love a device like the Sigelei 150W or the iPV3. Since I've had my Sigelei 150W my mech mods have been collecting dust.
