With the horror parody film series Scary Movie set to return, actress Melissa Barrera has confirmed she's open to in appearing in it following her firing from the Scream franchise.

Barrera confirmed as much in an interview with Inverse while promoting her new horror film Abigail. Obviously, that would be quite the opportunity for some meta commentary, especially considering the first Scary Movie largely parodied Scream.

"I always loved those movies," Barrera told Inverse. "When I saw it announced, I was like, 'Oh, that would be fun. That would be so fun to do.' "

Barrera, best known for her role as Samantha Carpenter in the recent Scream films, was fired from the franchise last November. At the time of the news breaking, it was reported that the reason for her termination was the actress' social media posts addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Earlier this month, Barrera began opening up about her forced departure from the series, telling the Associated Press in January that she had a "big awakening" in the months since the firing. Barrera once again discussed the topic during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last month, where she explained that she is not ruling out reprising her role should she have the opportunity to return to future Scream films, but added that "a lot of things would have to happen," before she would come back to the series.

Scream 7 is moving forward with Neve Campbell set to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott. Jenna Ortega, who co-starred with Barrera as her sister Tara Carpenter, will not be returning.

Paramount announced at CinemaCon last week that it was rebooting the franchise with a new installment. Though the studio didn't dive into specifics, we know that Neal H. Horitz, best known for his work on the Sonic the Hedgehog films and The Boys, is attached to the next film and will serve as its producer.

It'll be the first film in the series since Scary Movie 5 over a decade ago, which was the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise to date, making a little over $78 million at the box office. By the time of the fifth film's release, there was a decline in interest in the parody movies.
