My juice has WHAT in it?
This is a question that seems to be asked more and more every day and amazingly, I can't seem to recall anybody EVER asking what was in their (analog) tobacco cigarettes; much less demand that a certain chemical (arsenic maybe?) get removed by the manufacturer. No, we never did that and for years we simply sucked in the smoke and let the rush of calm flood over us as the nicotine and thousands of other chemicals invaded our bloodstream and tissues.
What am I talking about? I'm talking about the unwarranted fear generated (probably innocently) by people reading MSDS results and then inappropriately transposing those to their eLiquids andeFlavorings.
Why is this a concern you ask? Well, partly because it's a slippery slope. Let's just assume for one moment that we want our eLiquid completely free of anything with an inhalation warning as our only criteria. Immediately we have to remove the nicotine, it has an inhalation warning. We may as well remove all the flavorings as every component will have a warning as well and while we are at it, let's get rid of thePropylene Glycol (PG), the Vegetable Glycerin (VG) and hey… any water too because you know, inhaling too much water will kill you for sure! What is left? Nothing!
Seriously though, some common sense has to prevail here. Sure, there was a problem with Diacetyl (the butter flavoring that was used in popcorn for so many years) and the employees in factories using it in its pure and almost pure form. Diacetyl has almost been wiped out and if it were an animal would probably be on the endangered species list. Its replacements, Acetoin and Acetyl Propionyl are also starting to become the targets of flavor (witch) hunts.
Let's be honest for a moment, you are no longer exposing yourself to the thousands of known chemicals and carcinogens in cigarettes so let's stop the insanity over flavors. The truth is, this industry is young and we simply don't know what we don't know. This is the first time in history that large populations have started inhaling flavorings and the industries involved are responding to remove things that are identified as risky but there is no single great solution.
If you completely target a chemical for removal because it has a buttery taste and ONLY because of that taste you are severely limiting your future options for flavorings and going down a path that will end in a bland, flavorless world.
Let's take a look at a flavor called "A" and assume that in this flavor there is, among other flavor chemicals with inhalation warnings, an amount of acetoin at .07%. This flavoring, if used all by itself as the sole flavor in eLiquid at 10% flavoring would mean that the total amount of Acetoin in a 10ml bottle would be 0.735mg/ml. Generally, this flavor would probably be used somewhere around 1%-2% of the total 10% which means the total amount is 0.073 – 0.146 mg/ml in the final product.
So how does this compare to the nicotine, which is conveniently forgotten about? Well, if you used "Flavor A" at 1% in your final product (total Acetoin = 0.073mg/ml) and your nicotine is just 3mg/ml then you are consuming 40.832 times MORE nicotine than Acetoin.
Shocking! The point of all of this is not to say we shouldn't be concerned about what we are inhaling but rather let's not be so manic about it. We have collectively made a choice to move from a product that we know is not good for us to one that we all would expect to be a much healthier option based solely on a comparison of the number of chemicals contained in them both.
We should, of course, choose options that are always in our best interest and I'm convinced that with the changes that have already occurred through industry self-regulating that we will continue seeing improvements as this vertical market grows.
I'm ok with a little aceotin in my juice because I know I'm not sucking thousands of other chemicals into my lungs which have been proven to cause health issues plus, it just tastes so good in my custardy, buttery, whatever flavor I'm vapin'.
