My juice has WHAT in it?

This is a question that seems to be asked more and more every day and amazingly, I can't seem to recall anybody EVER asking what was in their (analog) tobacco cigarettes; much less demand that a certain chemical (arsenic maybe?) get removed by the manufacturer. No, we never did that and for years we simply sucked in the smoke and let the rush of calm flood over us as the nicotine and thousands of other chemicals invaded our bloodstream and tissues.

What am I talking about? I'm talking about the unwarranted fear generated (probably innocently) by people reading MSDS results and then inappropriately transposing those to their eLiquids andeFlavorings.

Why is this a concern you ask? Well, partly because it's a slippery slope. Let's just assume for one moment that we want our eLiquid completely free of anything with an inhalation warning as our only criteria. Immediately we have to remove the nicotine, it has an inhalation warning. We may as well remove all the flavorings as every component will have a warning as well and while we are at it, let's get rid of thePropylene Glycol (PG), the Vegetable Glycerin (VG) and hey… any water too because you know, inhaling too much water will kill you for sure! What is left? Nothing!

Seriously though, some common sense has to prevail here. Sure, there was a problem with Diacetyl (the butter flavoring that was used in popcorn for so many years) and the employees in factories using it in its pure and almost pure form. Diacetyl has almost been wiped out and if it were an animal would probably be on the endangered species list. Its replacements, Acetoin and Acetyl Propionyl are also starting to become the targets of flavor (witch) hunts.

Let's be honest for a moment, you are no longer exposing yourself to the thousands of known chemicals and carcinogens in cigarettes so let's stop the insanity over flavors. The truth is, this industry is young and we simply don't know what we don't know. This is the first time in history that large populations have started inhaling flavorings and the industries involved are responding to remove things that are identified as risky but there is no single great solution.

If you completely target a chemical for removal because it has a buttery taste and ONLY because of that taste you are severely limiting your future options for flavorings and going down a path that will end in a bland, flavorless world.

Let's take a look at a flavor called "A" and assume that in this flavor there is, among other flavor chemicals with inhalation warnings, an amount of acetoin at .07%. This flavoring, if used all by itself as the sole flavor in eLiquid at 10% flavoring would mean that the total amount of Acetoin in a 10ml bottle would be 0.735mg/ml. Generally, this flavor would probably be used somewhere around 1%-2% of the total 10% which means the total amount is 0.073 – 0.146 mg/ml in the final product.

So how does this compare to the nicotine, which is conveniently forgotten about? Well, if you used "Flavor A" at 1% in your final product (total Acetoin = 0.073mg/ml) and your nicotine is just 3mg/ml then you are consuming 40.832 times MORE nicotine than Acetoin.

Shocking! The point of all of this is not to say we shouldn't be concerned about what we are inhaling but rather let's not be so manic about it. We have collectively made a choice to move from a product that we know is not good for us to one that we all would expect to be a much healthier option based solely on a comparison of the number of chemicals contained in them both.

We should, of course, choose options that are always in our best interest and I'm convinced that with the changes that have already occurred through industry self-regulating that we will continue seeing improvements as this vertical market grows.

I'm ok with a little aceotin in my juice because I know I'm not sucking thousands of other chemicals into my lungs which have been proven to cause health issues plus, it just tastes so good in my custardy, buttery, whatever flavor I'm vapin'.

If nicotine was linked to permanent lung damage, that comparison with diketones would make sense. Fortunately for vapers, nicotine has no such troubling association, and has a number of beneficial properties.

Most of us want to know the nic content because we want/need the nic. Some of us want to know the diketone content because we don't want/need an additive that may cause us harm. Some of us continue to look for healthier choices now that we got rid of cigarettes. No manic witch hunt here, just making a choice.

At least we know that particular vendor doesn't think diketones are something to be concerned with, and doesn't want others to be concerned either. I choose to get my information from independent sources, not a vendor's staff member.

While I tend to side with what you have replied with.
I appreciate when vendor's take the time to address certain topics so as to help each person make whatever educated choice they may need to make.

Thanks for your reply MC5!

I prefer vendors that tell you where they stand too. It's the ones that make claims they can't or won't back up that are the problem.
Fully agreed. However, what can we do about this?
Any suggestions, feedback or ideas?

It seems lately that many vendors have been asked about this by customers, and their responses are a mix of published tests, reformulation and defensiveness. This free market is solving it for those who are concerned, as there is a growing group of vendors who are showing it is something they are avoiding. Which vendors the market prefers will eventually solve this, I expect.

It wasn't very long ago that virtually no vendors offered no nic or 3mg liquids, but they responded to what their customers asked for pretty quickly. After five years of vapers tossing around the diketone issue, it looks like it has caught the attention of more vendors too.

I think profit motive in the long run forces self regulation as vapers get more informed. Better that we vapers tell the vendors what we want than some external pressure forces it down their throats.

While I agree to a point what they say I dont agree with their stand on it professionally. Its more like they are trying to condone or make the use of D/A/AP seem not so bad insinuating " witch hunts" or "take out VG to then " and "Seriously though, some common sense has to prevail here." This is something you would say in private if someone asked your opinion but as a marketing tool this is a total fail. I would never tell a customer to use their common scene because their common scene is telling them to question these things.

I use D/A/AP in my personal life and professional and make clear I use these ingredients. I dont say its only got 0.0024% Diacetyl so Im not going to put a warning on it or say oh dont worry about that 0.0024% your just crazy and worrying to much just buy it and vape it. I dont care if it has 0.0000000001% D/A/AP we will put a warning on it and try to help educate those on what it is and what harm it may or may not cause and let them make an educated decision.

vapers are obviously adults that made a decision to better their health for one reason or another so to sit there and say come on why worry about that just by my stuff is wrong just to make a buck. A good example I can give is Game Over Custard. We do use the subs in that flavor and we make very very clear we do, does this hinder the sales of GOC ? not a chance its our #1 flavor and by volume has sold more GOC than everything combined. Truth in advertising works. key word is truth not opinions. truth is we dont know what vapig 0.005% D/A/AP does to your body after 12 hrs a day for 20 yrs so to say come on now use a little common scene just aggravates the crap out of me.

I can dazzle you guys with some math and fancy words to confuse you to get you to buy our stuff or say we use it here it is, here is some info we have but we cant say for certain the consequence Take the dazzle, sparkles, and personal opinions out of it and It would be a good post lol.
