You may be putting too thick or too thin a strand of cotton, in. If you pull the cotton out and it separates, you probably made it too thick. If you look into the end of the coil, and you see gaps after the cotton has e-liquid, then it's too thin a strand. Try cutting a few different widths of strips, see which seems to wick best for you. The cotton, should slide, through the coil, when the cotton is dry, without bunching up, but not have gaps where it meets the coil. Cotton will expand, some (5-15% give or take) as it soaks up the e-liquid. If the cotton burns, you will taste a huge difference. There are some really great video tutorials for wicking on youtube. I use the squares of Muji cotton, or Koh Gen Do, they are organic and unbleached. If you have cotton that is white, it has been bleached, usually with peroxide to make it white. That results in the first few pulls, tasting like peroxide. Be sure to peel off the outer layer of the cotton pad on both sides of the Muji or Koh Gen Do. That's the cosmetic "scrub" layer of the cotton square. If you still get, orange colors, I'd wash the RDTA in a warm soapy solution with just a little bit of dawn dish detergent, rinse and dry thoroughly and try again.
