New to making e juice; flavor isn't strong enough

I bought small bottles of flavoring from nicotine labs as well as a small bottle of nicotine. I use an app to make the recipes. I've had vaper's tongue several times so maybe the issue is me and not the flavor/recipe. Can anyone give me some insight on this recipe?

Nic 3mg; 100mL
Nicotine 3% (100mg PG base)
PG 16.48% (from tractor supply)
VG 67.52% (from walmart)
Blackberry 7% (PG base nicotine labs recommend 10-12%)
Lemon 6% (PG base nicotine labs recommend 10-12%)

I did a batch before with blackberry 6% and lemon 5% and it was pretty much the same. I thought if I used a little more, it would help :/ I used it right after I made it, and let it steep for a few days...no real change. I have made other juices with almost the same % and they all come out about the same.
I don't care so much for cloud as I do flavor hence all the PG bases.

I haven't used that company before so I can't speak to if the percents are correct. You may need to search Vu for an answer if someone doesn't chime in right away.

That being said...

1. A lot of new DIY folks mix some not too good mixes at the start. Myself included. It may take some practice getting it right. I know it suck hearing that, but it happens. All you gotta do from that.

2. If no one chimes in (if be surprised if that happened. Try a single flavor mix. Try just the blackberry by its self at 3%. If it's not strong enough. Add one more percent. I would not be surprised if you get pretty good flavor...maybe because the total you should be adding in flavor for this company is between 8%_12% between ALL flavors. Maybe hitting 13% is just one hair too high and your flavors are getting muted. If that's the case you can just add some unflavored pg/vg to your mix to dilute it down...its just a bit easier to just add some flavor.

On the website, it says to use between 10-12% for all the flavors I purchased so when I did blends, I made the total between 11-13%. I have made a total of 7 different combos, some are single flavor. I CAN taste the flavors, but it's mostly when I inhale, and quite muted on the exhale. Two blends were actually gross tasting right after I made it so I let it steep for a day, and tasked again and it was better. I think the longest steeped blend I have made has been a week exactly. I can't say I notice much of a difference. That's why I did try them at different % but was afraid of over doing it so I stopped at 13%. I have flavors coming tomorrow from Bull City Vapors so maybe I will be able to tell if it is the quality of the flavor itself or if it's just me lol.

P.s. thanks for a prompt response! I just wanted to make sure my % were generally appropriate and maybe if anyone else has used nicotine labs for flavor. I'll keep playing around with it and try at much lower % and work my way up.

Just a WAG...are you adding your flavoring by measuring them in drops?

I can't speak for your flavorings as I've not used that company before. That being said when you've not used a flavor before it would be a good idea to make a single flavor test batch of juice (about 5 ml aught to do it) and test the flavor in a dripping atty. You'll want to start your test batches at 5% flavor and add accordingly (called the "Five Percent Rule", and does not apply to FA or Capella which I believe the starting point is 1% because their flavors tend to be very concentrated). You can always add flavor but it is impossible to take out.

Above all if you haven't already you should start a juice journal. Personally I recommend a note book from the dollar store and a pen but one could use a word processing program on a computer or a phone app if they really wanted to. Notebooks and pens are quicker and easier for me as I'm in my mid-thirties and can be old-school about some things. Also I find trying to type and mix at the same time is pain in the ass.

As to measuring by drops. I recommend not measuring that way. For small batches syringes work best. for medium sized batches a graduated cylinder is perfect. Of course you could decide you prefer to mix by weight. There is a guide for that. The only way to be truly accurate in measuring your mix is by using either grams or milliliters. If you do decide to use weight, you'll want a scale that measured down to the 0.01g.

As for site recommendations as to flavor, it is best to ignore them, and do your own testing and gain experience. This is why I strongly suggest a dollar store notebook. It prevents making the same mistakes over and over, and it is more reliable than memory for reproducing the same juice over and over. Unless of course we're talking about a recipe you've made so many times you could do it in your sleep which will happen in time.

I actually do keep record of what I have done and the outcomes. I measure by weight with a scale except the drops...and I am aware that because I am doing some by weight and some by drops that it isn't exact but the % is very small. I actually make natural soap so I do get the just of this haha and the recipe I posted was just the very last one I did, all of the other batches I did was 30mL. My husband says they are good but I cannot taste them as much as he seems to. We are still using them lol I haven't wasted or discarded anything so this isn't a terrible problem but I'd love to figure out how to improve. I am actually getting the velocity clone so we CAN test them out in smaller batches. And my syringes are coming today along with the flavors.

Is there really a way to tell if I have used too much flavor?? If I don't use enough, it would be muted, and if I used too much, it could be muted? Lol trial and error

According to the reviews on Nicotine Labs website the flavour of Blackberry is light with one reviewer suggesting a sweetener was required to brighten and bring out the notes of the this flavour.

http://www.nicotinelabs.com/flavoring/fruits-and-nuts/blackberry-concentrated-flavoring.html

It could also be a matter of steep time. I know many flavours I use aren't prominent right after mixing and usually take a few days to "show up" and be tasted.

Another factor that could influence flavour is your device. Have you changed devices or changed coils recently? If you're using an RDA or RTA the height of your coil could drastically change taste. If it's a premade coil and you've changed it, is it the same material and resistance as your previous coil?

I seen that review. I tried to choose flavors that had okay reviews lol I ordered sweetener that is coming today as well as sour. I like sour ;)

As for device, my husband and I have had the same devices for a few months and nothing has changed in that aspect. I have an x cube 2 with arctic tank and disposable 0.2 ohm :/ and he has the rx200 with tvf4 tank and disposable 6 coil one. His does taste better in his tank and I had plans on getting that tank as soon as I used up all of my coils for mine. I have tried them all in my tank at different watts to see if I could find that spot as well as his. I've actually done quite a bit of troubleshooting. And all of this seems to be that I am the problem or my tank lol. I made a single flavor cinnamon fireball batch and in his he said he could taste it on the exhale and on mine I taste it on my inhale. Even with the fireball batch it seems muted to me. That one was recommended at 5% so I did that. I can definitely taste the cinnamon fireball but it doesn't seem like the taste sticks around but for 1 second :/ maybe I just need to eat some candy instead of vaping haha when we were buying pre made juice from the shop when we first started vaping, it seemed like the flavor was sticking around for at least a few seconds. I am a terribly hard person to please or deal with. Maybe I am expecting too much. My husband even let one of his friends try his and they asked where he got it because he liked it! Ugh. I'm frustrated because I want to be able to say I like it too!!!

I would also measure the flavorings by weight rather than drops. Now bear in mind I'm no scientist so I could be factually wrong but this is my experiences (and I've been mixing juice for since May of 2013--I'd have to dig up invoices to give you an exact date): Depending on what kind of taster you are the flavors could be muted (there are several factors that impact that), the concentration of the flavors (too little and the flavor is muted, too much and it could be muted, taste soapy, or taste chemically/perfumey/generally unpleasant), the condition of your pallet (for example you don't want to drink OJ after you've been vaping on menthol, well not immediately anyway).

As for improving, the only real way to improve is through trial and error. Taste is after all subjective. That being said, it has been my experience that by taking notes and becoming familiar with your flavors and what they taste like on their own, you have an idea of how use them. Believe me you will make terrible juice, you will also make some awesome juice. I've done both.

If you don't end up getting on with the Nicotine Labs flavours, I'd recommend giving Capella concentrates a try. I found it that it took me a little while to refine my taste buds. Capella concentrates might be a good place to start. Most of them are very sweet and strong flavours. I used to love them, but now i find them kind of sickly. However, they are very popular for good reason and most of them used at about 10-15% provide strong flavour. Definitely worth a try. Check feedback on the forum/forums for recommended percentages for particular flavours.

That reminds me, while ordering from Bull City vapors, I did see different brands such as capella but I cannot remember if any of the ones I purchased are that but my mom wanted a specific flavor and it contains <0.05 acetoin. What precautions should I take with this, if any? I didon't like the fact it had big WARNING notices lol but I read reviews and I see people do still use it!

I tend to favor TFA myself, but brand loyalty is over rated. Most people here use FA, FW, Capella and Inwara. I usually use TFA because it's easier to get. Wizard Labs offers TFA and Cap in 8mL vials if you want to test a flavor (which I always want to do before I go and buy a huge bottle of it--you don't save money by bulk buying stuff you don't use after all). They also have some inwara stuff but I've not played around with them, I only mix for myself.

You totally deserve to have your expectations met:cool:

Sounds like a combination of device and needing to add some flavour enhancer to your juice.

Hopefully the sweetener and sour make the difference:)

Okay. I think most of the flavors coming today were TFA or FA. I didn't even want to buy any flavor because I don't like spending $$ on something I don't know if I like but I'd rather spend a little $ to try this than spending $200/week at a shop for my husband and i. At that rate, cigarettes are cheaper lol but now I've hopped on the diy wagon and determined to make it work! Thanks for all of the tips!!

Right? So, because i'm cheap, ill just have to deal with this arctic tank for at least another two weeks (there's nothing wrong with the tank. I really like it...except the fact i cannot have RBA and possibly this tank being a factor for not so flavorful juice). When we first started, i ONLY liked menthol or mints and i have only recently gotten into fruit about a month ago. But i dont like sweet much, love sour. So im eager to try some enhancers! With that being said, how do i know the amount of enhancers to add? Where is my starting point? Is there a general or typical amount to use or start with? I know you cant tell me how much will make a batch sour enough for me but im obviously not adding 3% like flavors. I dont think the website even specified how to use it. That or i read over it. :/

As for the flavor for inhale vs exhale. Welp. That is one of the reason why we use flavors from two-three different brands sometimes in a mix. Each brand sometimes has a valuable attribute in their concentrate that's not prominent in another.

For me I am a mtl the ltm vaper on a subohm tank. I want flavor going and out.

This is why you see countless threads on "the best strawberry". The more is not single best imo. There's only personal preferance and combinations of strawberry from FA cap tpa INW and all the like

It's a personal choice for us diyers.

I'm starting to move away from any flavouring with bad stuff and it's hard at times as I feel I have to sacrifice taste for health (same is true with everything!). I know many of the really good mixers here use FA products as they typically don't have diketones and acetonin in them so are generally a better choice.

I love custards and was buying Capella Vanilla Custard V1 by the 250ml bottle because it was all I vaped but I'm trying other things to attain a similar flavour profiles.

There's some awesome community resources here in the form of knowledgeable people so the best thing to do is ask so you can make an informed choice that suits your needs:)

I would google the brand and type of enhancer you purchased and see how others are using it then start at the low end of that spectrum and work up until it's what you want.

Or

Try a search here;

Okay, good to know. It was a pumpkin spice or something my mom wanted. I haven't had an "appetite" yet for desserty or breakfast or whatever you want to call it.my very first juices were a coffee cappuccino and one that tasted EXACTLY like a Kool cigarette which I used to smoke so I loved it! Then, I got mints with menthol. And then got a BAD case of vaper's tongue. I ate lemons, ate pickles, scrubbed my tongue, tried everything! So then I got a lemon berry and it grew on me. Then got vaper's tongue and then HATED the mints lol so I've dipped my toes in a few more fruits and haven't gotten that sour I'm seeking yet. Once I get that, then I PLAN on trying desserty stuff and I noticed a lot of that had acetoin or other stuff in it :/

Okay cool thanks. That's where I originally started was that website and seen that people used enhancers and that they were very low % and then noticed while purchasing, there wasn't a real usage guideline to it. I'll do more research on them! Thanks.

Yes I am. I hold the pipette straight so each drop should be the same size/amount. Should I do it by mL instead?

My thinking is more to drop size versus method.

That app you use might advise you to use the number of drops per flavor. If your app is calculating say ...20 drops per ml and your pipette is delivering drops at a rate of 45 drops per ml, then the actual amount of flavor you are adding is not the 6 or 7% in your recipe but ...less.

Many folks (me included) use Ejuice Me Up to do recipes. I believe by default it calculates drop size at 20 drops per ml. The drop size can be easily be changed for the calculations, but if one just uses 20 drops and their dropper tip throws 60 drops per ml...well....

Just a WAG since you say..."flavor is not strong enough"

With enhancers, I would start with just a drop or 2 per 10 ml. You can always add more, but it is hard to take it out. Actually that applies to flavors as well, sometimes less is more.

I don't care so much for cloud as I do flavor hence all the PG bases.

You should try using less total VG to get more flavor, like 50/50VG or 60/40VG.
I'm using 70/30VG myself.
Once you get some mixes you like then you can try raising up the VG level a bit at a time if needed.
Although using better brands of flavors should certainly help too.
You may even find less/no need for enhancers.
But I tend to like the vanilla/creamy type mixes vs. the Sour ones anyway.

If anyone cares, I adjusted the drops per ml in my app, AND I compared it to e liquid recipes calculator and it's the same so I feel pretty okay with dropsome IF I decide to go that route. I also just bought a dripper for taste testing ;) AND, I noticed that a lot of posted recipes are using the full % for EACH flavor in blends....i.e. pineapple recommended at 10-12%, blueberry at 3%, etc. I just made a pineapple, tangerine, blueberry sour with each company recommended % and tested it on the dripper. I think it was a success! It needs to steep but I think i should do each flavor the recommended % in blends versus making all flavors in a blend the total recommended usage rate. Does that make sense? Lol so flavor % total came to 16 or 17%

Not asking for your recipe asking how much flavor and more details so maybe we can see why your recipe did not come out like you planned.

Well right off the top of my head here 75 Drops of pineapple seems extremely high to me. I just made a Strawberry Peach today that needed a little extra so I added 3 drops to a 15 ML bottle as a test. I am far from a expert DIY'er as I only started on Tuesday but 4 successful recipes so far with no flushes.

Good Luck!

Another thing I am seeing is that your flavors are almost 20% of the total volume. Like I said not an expert but just seems like way too much!

The recommended amount for the pineapple is 10-12% but the others come from another company to use starting around 5%. Without steeping, it is really flavorful so I ASSUME it won't turn chemically tasting after steeping? Idk I just went on a limb and tried that and it worked for that particular recipe.

I just think the total amount of flavor is excessive. So far with my DIY if it calls for 8% of each flavor and I used 2 I split the flavor in two and start at 5% each for 10% total. I did a Strawberry Peach today this way and I did add a couple of drops of pineapple to one 15 MK bottle as an experiment. So my total flavor is just over 3% of the finished total volume.

Well, I was doing blends and making the TOTAL to 12-13% but the flavors were muted. Like I did blackberry at 7% and lemon at 6% and it wasn't good. So I just tried using the recommended amount for eachieving flavor and it worked lol I only did that one time so far so I honestly don't know if it works for all of them. I was looking on e liquid recipes at other people's and I seen that a lot of them were between 12-17% total. That's where I got the idea to try it. I thought it looked high too. I suppose I could try it on a few more batches to see what happens. I have only just started about a week ago so I clearly don't know any better yet. I don't like dessert or cereal flavors and I can't go mint anymore because I'm traumatized from vaper's tongue so I really need to come up with fruity recipes...sour in pacticular. When you do small batches like 5mL, what container are you making them in? I only have 30mL bottles and 100mL bottles and it is fairly annoying having to wash them out and let them dry.

One thing I do is to look at the flavors to see if they could actually cancel each other out. Like adding sugar to sauce to cut the acidity but you never taste the sugar. I feel the best way to approach it is to start at lower flavor amounts because it is easier to add then take out or dilute with more volume. I have actually been doing 30 MLs which some consider high volume to start with.

Ummmmm I either have no common sense or I havent done enough research lol I don't know what flavors would cancel the other out!!
I suck at this.
What I do know is I need to get syringes. I thought I ordered some but I didn't :( are there any other websites I should be reading on regarding tips for making juice? So I don't look stupid asking these questions on forums? Lol

No, I disagree you do have common sense because your not continuing blindly. Try exploring some cooking sites for tastes that go together or should not be mixed together. It may be chemistry but they call them recipes...............

I am trying to get a friend to get back into vaping and I thought she would enjoy DIY. She said she did not want to be a chemist and I told her it i morelike cooking s you are really creating new flavors or trying to recipe that taste. YMMV

Lol that's where I have a problem too. I have no idea what to mix with whathe :( I just know I like sour fruity candy. I am way too difficult and picky I hate it. I made an apple pie juice for my mom today and she loved it. I swear I fought to hold in vomit. I have my work cut out for me.
