New to Vaping – Need Advice on My First Setup!

Hello everyone!

I'm a new member here and happy to be a part of the vaping community. I've just made the transition from smoking to vaping, but since there are so many products available, I feel a little lost. I would appreciate some tips on the best starter kit for an newbie. I would like something simple to use, with good taste and some reasonable battery life.

I've heard of pod systems such as the Caliburn and even mods with fillable tanks. Which would be best for making the switch from smoking easier? And what is a good nic strength to begin with?

Any suggestions for e-liquids would be helpful as well—something that's got a solid throat hit without being overpowering.

Hoping to learn from you all and share my experience vaping. Thank you in advance for your guidance!
Cheers!

Hi and welcome to VU forum.
Congrats to you on switching from cigarettes to vaping. Sorry , but I quit cigs so long ago (over 10 years) using Mistic gas station cig-a-likes. Then moved to the Kanger eVod and so on. Now I use a Billet box with a rebuildable RBA and use my own eliquids( not so easy for newbies)
I am not sure what the current trend for the best beginner vape, everybody has a different opinion, I have never tried the newer disposables or the pod systems. I believe I started out at 5% nic liquid. Now I vape mainly 0 nic liquids.
Best of luck to you on your vape journey.

Welcome and hello! Start with something small. I would avoid disposables (can't be refilled and can get expensive in the long run) A "pod mod" is a good choice (refillable, rechargable, have controls over power setting and you can get extra pods/coils) Having an extra pod or two is nice because you can use a different juice (e-liquid) in each one (like different flavors) and/or different coils (with different power settings... many of these devices have a "smart" feature that knows which coil and sets the proper power)
Nic strength depends on how many cigs you smoked a day. It is measured in mg/ml or %... 10 mg = 1%, 50 mg = 5% (the stronger juices often use what's called "nic salts".. less harsh but you can use regular "freebase" up to about 12-18 mg) Depending on your budget, it's wise to have two devices (one as a back-up) It will seems expensive at first but consider how much cigs cost (I used to spend almost $300 a month) As far as good flavors... that is totally subjective and everyone has a different opinion about that. Many try to replicate tobacco flavor but that's hard to do so just try something you like. Some people say menthol is what worked, others say clove, rootbeer, cinnamon, ect. There are so many choices (fruits, creams, bakeries) Good luck and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions :)

Do best RPA tools help in tracking vaping trends and preferences?

Hi jenniferellino,

Welcome to VU. I'm always happy to hear of another soul who defeated cigarette addiction by vaping.

I can tell you what I use happily. My battery is the eLeaf brand, both the iStick 30 watt and the iStick 40 watt. There is also a 20 watt. It might help to know that I get a normal vape that mimics cigarette inhale/exhale by vaping at 10.5 watts, so I don't need anything more powerful than any of those. The boxy shape is easy to hold, and stands up on its own. I've been using these since around 2015. They last a long time.

You always want two batteries, to be using one while having one on the recharger. You'll also want a wall charger ("wall wart").

PerfectVape has a starter kit that has everything except the wall wart:

Central Vapors has the wall wart for 1.99.

I think a glass tank, a "glassomizer" is far better and safer than a plastic one, since some flavors will damage plastic and may pick up harmful particles.

Someone else will have to stroll up and suggest a glassomizer, since the one I use is disappearing from the market, but you can still find it here and there, the Aspire ET-S BVC. It comes loaded with a 1.8 ohms coil, but I buy 5-packs of replacement coils at 1.6 ohms.

The initial outlay is expensive, but in the long run far less expensive than disposables, and once you get started, maintenance is cheaper, just replacing coils when necessary, and replacing the batteries when they give up the ghost (but the eLeaf lasts a really long time).

I get my liquids from PerfectVape.com, but I also noticed Central Vapors has quite a few flavors, with your choices of PG/VG ratio and nic strength, at good prices.

I wish you the best of luck, and enjoyment of the journey. This is your time of learning and discovery, after which you'll be so comfortable with vaping and getting products, you'll be helping other smokers try vaping, which is kind of the story of my own journey.

One more thing, you should familiarize yourself with ohms laws, to be safe using open systems:

Hi @jenniferelliino welcome to the forum
You might want to watch the hardware section for good trustworthy used mods, sometimes there's a real deal in there. If you need help just sing out and there are many here that will be glad to help you.

@jenniferelliino Google the Oxva Origin or Oxva Origin X. It's a Pod Mod kit that uses disposable coils. The e-juice tank is refillable. If you go down this road buy about 5 boxes of coils. There are 5 coils in a box. My wife runs an Oxva Origin with ninotine salt that I make for her. She likes that she can control the wattage(9-14 watts). She prefers the .3 ohm Oxva Unicoils setting the wattage at 14 watts. One coil lasts her 5 days. You can also use regular nicotine(not salt nic) with either the .3 ohm or .2 ohm Unicoil. Wife didn't like the .5 ohm Unicoils, said the draw was too tight.
Hope this helps and fire away with the questions we're here to help!

I looked up those OXVA pod mods and also found a Origin SE... looks nice (and simple to use :) )
My favorites are no longer available so I'm also looking into getting a new one.
