Newb recipe question..

I heard there is an award for the stupidest question ever asked on an internet forum so I am going to throw my hat in the ring! (I'm sure I will read this thread some day and cringe.)

I have never done a DIY batch of ejuice, but I am gearing up. I've got my white lab coat and safety glasses so I am well on my way. :^)

I have been searching for "FA only" recipes. (long story as to why I want to go that route)

I see recipes here on VU that look like:

1% fa custard
1% fa vienna cream
2% fa lime cold pressed
2% fa lemon sicily

(BTW, I have "eJuice Me Up" installed and ready to go for calculating volumes.)

Let's say I want to go with nic at 3%.

And a standard 70/30 PG/VG for the first batch.

(Drum roll for the first attempt at stupidest question....) The flavor and nic percentages above add up to 9%. Does this mean that the other 91% is the VG/PG?

2nd question: FA flavors appears to be PG based? (I checked a lot of them but not all.) Can I still use a 70/30 PG/VG blend? And mix it up real good with my magnetic mixer.

There ya go - flame away! :^) :^)

Yes, the other 91% is VG/PG! Do remember that if the nic is in PG, this also counts in the PG percentage of the overall mix.

And, yes, FA flavors are PG based, so this is accounted for in your PG percentage.

I just shake my bottles once mixed - no need for anything else really. And be sure to shake the flavoring bottles well before using them!

Welcome to the VU!

You can not calculate amount of nicotine to add without the base nicotine content used for the calculation. 100MG/ML Nicotine requires twice as much as 48MG/ML. Also you can't calculate VG/PG percentages without the VG/PG content of you flavors and nicotine.

Sorry, I didn't answer clearly part of your original question. You have flavoring that totals 6%, so the rest will be a combo of your nic, pg, and vg. As said above, you have to put the nic concentration into the juice calculator, and also tell it whether it's in pg or vg, to get the right amounts.

Ok great.

I have two bottles of nic here.

(1) 100 mg/ml Nicotine (10%) PG
(2) 100 mg/ml Nicotine (10%) VG

So I can use with PG or VG - which should I use? Or does it matter, as long as I tell EJuice Me Up which one I'm using.

I find it much easier to work with pg nic than with vg nic. You can use either, as long as you specify in the calculator which one you're using! And be sure to shake it up first :)

Always double check the amount of nic you're going to be using: for instance I make my 30ml bottles at 3mg of nic, so for this I'll use .9ml of 100mg/ml nic.

Awesome, thank you steve and amanda for the speedy replies.

The calculator should have VG/PG content for flavors and nicotine along with field for Nicotine base content and VG/PG percentage of your nicotine base. That is the only way to accurately calculate it. Also if your flavors have alcohol there should be a field for that.

Good Luck and VAPE Safe!

Note: It took me a while to write up my answer to other folks have already answered. I'll leave mine in below anyhow

(Drum roll for the first attempt at stupidest question....) The flavor and nic percentages above add up to 9%. Does this mean that the other 91% is the VG/PG?

It depends on what you mean by "I want to go with nic at 3%."

If you mean "I already did the calculation and the nic I am adding will be 3% of the total volume of the resulting juice" then yes, the other 91% will be the PG/VG diluent (carrier).

Maybe you mean you want to make a 3mg/ml nic juice? If so, we'd also need to know the concentration of the nic you're using.

2nd question: FA flavors appears to be PG based? (I checked a lot of them but not all.) Can I still use a 70/30 PG/VG blend? And mix it up real good with my magnetic mixer.

It depends on what you mean by "use a 70/30 blend". I promise I'm trying to understand what you mean rather than trying to be pedantic.

If you mean "use a premixed 70/30 blend as the diluent and end up with a 70/30 overall ratio" then no, that math won't work b/c the flavors and nic are suspended in their own PG as you noted. If you mean "make up the remaining 91% with PG and VG to attain an overall 70/30 ratio", then yes.

Not all flavors are suspended in PG as many of the flavors I purchase are VGD or VG Dominant and no Diacetyl or Diketones.

When you say "nic at 3%".... do you mean 30mg/ml? Because that's what 3% nic would be. Or do you actually mean 3mg?

While the majority of Flavour Art (FA) flavors are PG based, they do make some that are not. While it would be surprising to see a non PG FA flavor mentioned in this Forum, you can check it at: flavourart.com/en/

In regards to an award for the stupidest questions; Sheesh! you might as well pick up your hat out of the ring now. Unlikely any would rank in the top 10. Sorry.

Welcome!

I would seriously consider mixing by weight rather than volume. Just click on tools/Gram set to input the values on the Ejuice me up calculator. 1 is good for all at small volumes but for larger amounts PG 1.038 and VG at 1.26. It's amazing what a slight difference in the ratios of flavours can do to the end result. The more accurate you are in your mixing, the easier it is to replicate that "killer" recipe you discover by accident! If you don't have appropriate scales, a lot of peeps use these http://www.amazon.com/American-Weigh-Scales-LB-501-Digital/dp/B005UGBG20?tag=e04ed-20 Oh...ignore the price, than can be had for a helluva lot less!
