Newbie Needs Help

Hi everyone. Great site you have here! Let me start off with a little background. I am 45 and I am an ex smoker. I did smoke from the age of 15 until I was 35 and I gave up.

I was always intrigued by vaping since the concept became popular and just recently I had a puff of a friends (0MG) vape and I like the taste. Perhaps I even liked the hand to mouth motion, perhaps I liked the fact that I was smoking without nicotine, I really dont know the reason, but I liked it. So this friend sold me his old Reuleaux RX200 with a Uwell tank and some juice for 30 bucks. I quickly became hooked on vaping even though I was smoking 0% nicotine and started researching other mods and tanks.

I started of by buying a Smok TV8 and some juice by Snott Shot, I then went out and purchased an Alien Box mod, the new colored screen version and since then I have ordered a load of sample flavors including some cigar flavors. Everything is at 0% nicotine. Now the Alien kit came with a baby beast, I have not used that yet. I swapped the TV8 from the RX200 and I am using the coil that recommends 120-180 Watts. So that's the background. here are my questions.

1. I was vaping at 80 WATTS, getting good clouds, using the Snotshot Juice the taste was OK, but was vaping under the recommended coil wattage. Is that ok?
2. I changed the wattage to 120 WATTS, its a bit warmer, I cant pull for as long as 80WATTS but I do get more flavor and just as much smoke. Probably 100Watts is my sweet spot. Should I change the coil to one of the others that came in the pack? One more suited to a 100 WATTS? Or does it not really matter?
3. Is vaping at the wattage's I mentioned ok? What are the parameters for choosing the wattage? Is it just personal preference?
4. Here is my big question. I want to experiment with flavors, how do I clean a tank? I mean I have seen videos but do I need to wash the wick and change the coils each time? Should I use the old Uwell tank as my flavor tester tank? Or do I go out and but a few more tanks, one for fruity flavors, one for tobacco flavors etc etc? How do you do it?

One last thing. Even though I am not smoking Nicotine I have the craving to try it. Is this normal? Or should I just stay the F away??

Thats it for now. Sorry for the nub questions guys. I may have some more!!!

Hmm, well first thing ya need to know is that everybody has a preference, and some times the coils don't match that. I'd change the coil to something more fitted for you, just be sure not to push your batteries past what they can handle safely. Vaping under the recommended watts is fine, as long as it falls within the min - max range of the coil. To clean your tank, I usually run the glass under hot water for a couple minutes, dry it off real good, then take a cue tip to the inside of the mouth piece.
You don't need to wash your tank every time, I only wash it when I go from one flavor to an extreme different, get a dry hit, or have a bad flavor. With your coils, I'd only change 'em when the flavor diminishes real bad, you have some bad juice, you get a dry hit, or extreme opposite flavors. As for the nic craving, it's normal. I'd buy a small bottle of 1.5 or 3mg juice see if ya like it, if not throw it out, don't do it if it ain't for you. I personally don't enjoy a juice as much if it's 0mg, but that's just me. Don't worry about questions, we were all new once. Welcome to VU :vino:

Going UNDER the recommended wattage is fine. Your coils may even last longer, but I'm not certain on that. It makes sense to me.

You'll burn out your coils faster the higher you go on the wattage. If you're okay with having to spend 14 to 20 bucks on a pack of coils every few days instead of every week or two, by all means vape at 100w. Just don't go TOO high though or you might cause problems.

3. Is vaping at the wattage's I mentioned ok? What are the parameters for choosing the wattage? Is it just personal preference?

It's personal preferrence mostly. For example, I will mostly vape at between 110 and 160 watts, but then again I'm using a dripping atomizer where I can build my own coils, so I can vape at these higher wattages as long as my amps stay at a safe level. And I often switch between running two coils and four, depending on whether I'm using a dessert juice, which seems to taste better at higher wattages or a fruit or mixed drink juice, which vapes better at lower wattages for me.

Just be aware that different juices vape differently. You'll likely have to adjust the wattage to get the flavor you want whenever you change juices.

You don't want to run water through your coils unless you're using a dripper. I've always been told that water can mess up a normal coil, and it makes sense to me because there's a cotton wick inside the coils that can get wet and that'll hinder its ability to soak up your juice. But you can remove the coil, run warm tap water through the tank, make sure everything's nice and dry, then reseat the coil and everything will work like normal.

One last thing. Even though I am not smoking Nicotine I have the craving to try it. Is this normal? Or should I just stay the F away??

It's different for each person. My mom never got cravings and she was smoking since she was 16. (She's 60 now.) But I know when my friend first started vaping after smoking for 22 years, he did get cravings for a good while before they stopped. You're going to have to bite the bullet for a bit if you really want to stop smoking. We have many people here who have been there before and can help you achieve this goal. Perhaps one of them will chime in with their input.

Welcome aboard.....:vino:

If you feel like using nicotine, go for it. It's not addicting as some report. I smoked for over 40 years, I can vape zero nic without any problems. I like a little nic for the calming effect.

I hate to go against Champton but......... lol

I am told by several people at various vape shops that if you go under the minimum wattage you will burn your coil out faster, which sounds strange but I trust these folks and their advice. with smok coils they are stamped with the wattage for the coil and also the best flavor wattage range, if 100w is too much for you then I would get another coil that runs at what ever wattage you prefer in the middle of the range and like has already been said you will most likely have to adjust the wattage for certain juices.

I find Smok over rates there coils and always find that I'm under the recommended wattage and get about 2 weeks from a coil. There are threads about this so others agree. If your happy with the vape than that's the right wattage for you. Change the coil when you lose flavor.

Some folks do wash there coils but it won't do much and it may take a day for them to dry out. Vape the tank as low as you feel safe without burning the wick and change flavors. You will get a few cross over hits until all the old flavors gone before you get the new one.

I miss not having a bit of nic but if you don't need it I'd say don't start.

Dude, you're not going against me. If you feel you have better information than I have, please post it. I won't take it personally. Hell, I might learn something from you.

However, I believe you're mistaken on this. Check out these links:

http://vapingunderground.com/threads/vaping-a-coil-lower-than-recommended-wattage.242542/
https://www.reddit.com/r/electronic.../do_lower_watts_burn_out_subohm_coils_faster/
https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/f...er-to-sub-ohm-below-recommended-watts.680351/

Bottom line: According to these links, although coils are manufactured to give the best performance at their stated wattage ranges, going below the recommended range won't hurt anything. The worst that'll happen is you'll get less vapor, a bit of gurgling and maybe some unvaporized juice on the coil, or your coil might flood if you go TOO low.

I don't understand how you could possibly blow out a coil at, say 50 watts when it's rated for, say between 70 and 80 watts. The numbers don't add up in my view. The juice might not be able to vaporize as quickly, but I can't see how that would add up to such a massive heat increase as would be needed to burn out the coil. Especially since according to Ohm's Law, these coils would need to run at a higher resistance range to deliver the performance they claim to be able to deliver at the specified wattage range, which means they can't generate as much heat. More resistance = less current = less heat.

However, that's just how I understand the situation. Perhaps you know something else that's at play here? Or maybe my information is off?

I do know this much though: The "recommended" wattage range is just there to tell you where you can get the best performance out of the coil.

you and me have the same attitude dude lol

the way it was explained to me by one was that by going under the reccomended wattage you risk gumming up the coil, but I may be wrong hell I have been before lol.

First, welcome.
Next.. here is the thing.. vape where you like to vape to get the flavor and result. Screw the cost of a few coils. You can always learn to build your own. For the price of that pack of coils someone mentioned.. i can build coils for years. I mean really, if you aren't enjoying your vape the way you like it.... why bother? Great that you are sticking to 0 nicotine GRATS!!!
Now, about the coils.. I build my own. I have been using the same 2 coils for about 6 weeks now. Every so often, when the cotton gets scortched or not wicking properly, I take it out, dry burn the gunk off my coils, a quick brush with toothbrush (after cooled a bit) blow on them to remove dust, rewick and away ya go.

Of course, you can go all pycho-crazy-paranoid about coils.. like take out the cotton, dry burn, rinse in water, dry burn again, soak in vodka and air dry, rewick... take the newly wicked coils to a priest for blessing... lol ok if i actually had to do all that.. i would just build 2 new coils.

Dry burn method is fine, and will get you a month or more, out of a set of coils.
