Of course you can. but you need to do a bit of math. You must match the battery amp discharge and the coil heads net resistance for Ohm's law parity, and battery safety.
Once you know the wattage output (part of the same Ohm's law calculation), you can match that to the best option, replacement coil head.

One also needs to consider the type of top cap the unregulated mod has. If it's aa sprung 510 or one with an adjustable pin, then any tank will be fine. If it's a hybrid mech mod where the 510 is just threads and a hole, you need to look at the 510 of the atty very closely as the actual positive pole of the cell is used in leu of a 510 positive pin. A recessed atty pin will cause a hard short on a hybrid as will one that's flush. A protruding pin is needed and you need to take care how much you tighten the switch down as over tightening can crush the positive terminal of the battery, which also will end in a hard short.

You've gotten two very valuable pieces of advice - use an ohm's law calculator to determine what power your coil will be delivering using a mech and decide whether that's a good range for you, and make sure you aren't using a hybrid-style mech (or be very sure your 510 pin protrudes sufficiently and is locked in place). Most of the "exploding e-cig" stories I've seen lately are from people using tanks with hybrid mechs, so I just don't recommend them at all, especially for new users.
Also, make sure that the power draw your coil will create is within the continuous amperage rating of whatever battery you use - and that your battery is made by a supplier honest enough to publish their continuous rating - that means Samsung, LG, or Sony (but there are lots of Sony fakes floating around).
