No more mister nice guy

So it's finally happened: I'd been diddled by one of my converts.

I have (or rather had) this hobby: whenever I'd meet a smoker who expressed interest in quitting using e-cigarettes, I'd lend them a starter kit consisting of a VV eGo battery, a charger, 2 clearos, 2 bottles of 12 mg nic juice, and a printed set of instructions, costing around 50 euros in total. I'd tell them to pay me back if they quit smoking with it, after the number of days corresponding to what they'd pay to smoke 50 euros worth of cigarettes, or return the kit if they hadn't quit or if they wanted a better setup.

With this scheme, people who wanted to quit could try vaping at no cost, and it would cost me nothing, aside from having 50 euros constantly "floating around" somewhere.

I've converted 66 smokers to vaping that way, over a year and a half, and one didn't manage to quit but gave me back my kit. Well, the 68th won't pay me back or return the kit: he keeps promising he will when I meet him, and won't answer the phone. It's been going on for nearly 4 months.

Well, that's it now. This guy has broken the chain. Unless I get my money back, I'm done converting smokers. I see no reason to waste another 50 euros on a replacement kit. All this doesn't give me anything at all at the end of the day. 66 people who've quit smoking... I reckon I've done my part. I'm not Mother Theresa after all...

Sorry you finally found the jerk. But there's 66 people out there, that are as grateful as they can be. Good job.

"No more mister nice guy"

Let's be honest - you have never really been the 'nice guy' - which is part of the reason why I respect your opinions :D

Why, thank you :) But there are 66 people in my area who constantly thank me for helping them quit smoking, and *they* think I'm nice :)

Silver lining: a number of these folks are busy spreading the good word themselves. I guess it's like a chain reaction or something.

Hell, you've done your part IMO. More than most would do for the benefit of others. Shame that someone had to ruin it for anyone who might have been converted next, but it was bound to happen eventually. Not everyone is as decent a person as you apparently are. Well done nonetheless!

Thanks. On the bright side, vaping is becoming more and more mainstream. Most smokers are perfectly aware of the existence of vaping as an alternative these days, and there's a kajillion B&Ms that have opened in town recently. It's not like they have a hard time finding vaping hardware or advice anymore, so they don't really need me.

The only thing I still do is fight the FUD spread by the tobacco industry: I can't count the number of smokers who tell me "Yeah, I'd try vaping, but I've heard it's even worse than cigarettes." When someone tells me that, I hand out an information booklet printed by the French-speaking vaping asociation Aiduce, which is well researched and tells no lies. I always have a couple of these booklets with me, and I get them from the main B&M in my area. At least that's cheap and easy to do.

Yea man.. i work for a giant insurance company and I was literally the FIRST person to start vaping here (going out to the old smokers area) I have already converted at least 10 people that I'm friends with.. and every week I see a new person who has asked others that I converted - so much so that HR finally added something about vaping in the office to our handbook (I still do it inside because I don't care about rules) but its funny to see how popular it has gotten since I first started 2 years ago.. I no longer get those strange looks - I now get asked about my mods/attys - which is pretty awesome

Let all the people you helped know what happened and see if they'll help you with the cost of another convert kit so you can keep on helping others. I bet between all 66 of them you get another kit together. Your success rate is impressive. Nice job and please don't give up just yet. Give the folks you've helped a chance to be a part of you continuing to help others.

Don't let one douche bag ruin it for you. You think mother Teresa was treated well by everyone she tried to teach?

@Giraut I think you have done well to have made it that far before the chain broke.
That's a lot of converts, pat yourself on the back.

It's nice to see just how much vaping is spreading, I hope to get some convert eGo kits here soon to have handy for people I run into.

I carry around a cassa card that my local brick and mortar hands out and when people ask me about vaping, possitive or negative I hand them that card so they can educate themselves. Especially in a case where someone has a negotive connotation about vaping. Main stream media is trying their hardest to screw us.

66 ex-smokers is a good deal Giraut. You've done great!. There's always that prick that will take advantage of a situation and not give the kit back or the money for it. I gave a woman at work a Vamo V5 and a mini nautilus, both were used, but working and clean to help her quit. She put both on ebay that night, even used her fucking work email as a contact. I gave them to her, so she could do what ever she wanted with them, but the kicker was she came to me a week later and said that the Vamo was broken and needed another mod. I took out my phone and showed her the image of her posting with her work email address on ebay. Both sold for $30. The look on her face was that of getting busted big time. I won't deal with flat out liars, so I just walked away.

When the bad deeds of others outnumber the good deeds that are done, it is only a matter of time before the deed well runs dry.
There is only one solution. I'm going to buy a bucket.

The guy who "stole" my vaping hardware still hasn't returned it - I can't call it anything but stealing at this point... So I had promised myself I'd never lend no more vaping hardware to nobody else as a result. But...

A close colleague of mine told me he wanted to quit smoking and try vaping. I thought, what the hell, I know him well. So I lent him one of my beloved E-LVTs with a spare Protank 2 I had lying around. Good enough to quit smoking, I thought.

Well, he did quit smoking. He also gave me back my hardware in good condition (because he ended up buying something he liked better), paid me for some juice and a spent atomizer head. But he told me politely but sternly that I "hadn't given him the best vaping hardware to try out, and he was lucky he saw the potential of vaping in spite of the poor hardware, instead of plain giving up on the idea".

Whaaaat?

What the fuck is wrong with people???
