Hey aspr is back! I was wondering where you been man! Now I see you were busy building some badass, hard to make coils. Those look beautiful to say the least man. Did you pick up KBee wire for a sponsor? If so that's great. I love the look of hybrid coils but don't even know where to start when making them. My mind cannot comprehend it.

Thanks brother!

Yes and no. I can use their wholesale site. Nothing free. But ill take it. I always forget about this thread. Danny (whiteowl84) and ray got me hooked on ig. I thought the hybrid would vape good... looks good atleast! Its in the trash box

What danny said\/
You just cut what your doing after about 1.5" and skip 1" then do another 1.5". Now you just fill in the blank.

I'm almost embarrassed to post pics on here lol
This is only like my 4 build, I am hoping to get into the more advanced builds soon but I have to take baby steps

Thanks

Thanks, I am getting ready to try an alien build again, the first one was horrible. I think I will try building with a two core this time and go from there

Aliens took me a lot of hours and cussing to get down. Some people seem to get them easier than I did. Still not perfect, but getting closer.

Got a lot of help with my coils from this very thread. Amazing builders on here, and most if not all are willing to help. Gotta start somewhere.

@Cloud_Generator

No real shortcut to still needing a bit of practice.

But a couple things I picked up here.

@whiteowl84 suggested I use hot glue on the ends of the parallel cores. Keeps everything in place.

83e6056049d459a9ebb33e4d9f725d6d.jpg

@raymo2u suggested to wrap the cores with ribbon and crimp it tight so the cores flatten and stack on eachother, creating a slider. Make an inch or 2 at a time, slide it down, repeat. Absolute lifesaver. Keeps cores neatly in place, no collapse.

Only other trick I learned is to piss off my wife by spending countless hours in the garage. Worked for me.

I Don't remember the resistance or guage of wire on this... resistance was probably upwards of .3

Kanthal parallel split
4mm

Worked really good

The ribbon slider is a good recommendation, I will try that

If you have good swivels paper clips work good as well. They even fling themselves off when you get close to them sometimes. (Makes me happy I don't have to stop). The best tip I got is keep ahead of it and go full speed.

I also found out that I prefer to go clockwise (wire goes over top) first then counter clockwise for the rewrap. I don't know why but it made aliens crazy super easy to wrap for me. Almost perfect every time, right until the last 8" or so of the alien skin.

my room mate started vaping when she moved in here a few months ago. i have been trying to look out for her with coils and some spare hardware to get her started. yesterday we got some vape mail so she decided to start her own coil making journey tonight, and came up with a foot of pretty much perfect 28ka1/36n80 fused claptons. heres the ones she installed on her new fishbone/skeleton key combo. almost as proud of these as i was when she stopped cigarettes...after she went to bed i snuck this pic for you guys. been vaping for six months, first ever build:

You guys are doing some beautiful claptons, I haven't had the time to practice so I can't even do a basic clapton well, but I have some swivels and want to try those next time I get a chance.

I twist a lot of wire though, this was really fine guage kanthol and a ribbon wire twisted up, really thin and fragile, but very responsive, which is what I wanted. Resistance jumped from like .13 to .3 after some use, it worked really well until I got overzealous with the wattage and draw time and melted them apart.

There are some really amazing builds here, intricate stuff with lots of wire, and I'm just wondering, how do you keep the resistance high enough for it to be functional?

When I try going big I usually end up with really low resistance that won't fire on a regulated mod and that I'm not about to put on a mech lol.

Parallel mech or G2. A quad parallel does like 350w at 0.05ohm. 170w at 0.1ohm.
The G2 will fire anything with a 45amp limit.
Btw: Any coil using bridges like the one you posted is going to have a hotspot there.
Simple round and oblong/radiator coils are the only way you can minimize loss and hotspots.

I have used every thing I have made, that said some are just too low and beefy to get a good vape. There are several regulated mods that go lower than .1 in power mode. Lots and lots of mods will go to .06 in TC. The hohm slice goes down to .000001 ohms the hohm wrecker goes down to .007 ohms. The lasimo l1 and lux go down to .06 in power mode. There are many others out there just gotta look.

iJoy Maxo and Lux, any DNA mod and any HohmTech mod.
Any regulated mod is going to start dropping in power as you go lower. The ohm load affects the power hitting the atty. Higher ohm loads will have more voltage and less amperage to make a given wattage. Lower builds will have more amperage and less voltage to make a given wattage.
This is where parallel mech mods are nice because the amperage stacks in parallel along with the capacity as opposed to a series mod where only the voltage stacks.
The lower you go on a mod the more power you get. Since parallel mods split the load over every cell you can safely build very low and get loads of power.
As long as you are at the batteries CDR or lower (and using name brand batteries) you can fire wide staples with few wraps and be safe about it.
Don't be an Andy, know your shit.

So on a hybrid coil...I wrap an inch and a half or so one way, then cut the wire? Then skip an inch and continue...Then fill in the blank spot with a completely different wire? That's why it didn't click in my head...I always thought you needed to keep the wraps all one piece and run them continuously. I'm a long ways away from doing a hybrid and doing it well

On a 3mm lD coil, each wrap is .5" or every 2 wraps is one inch.

Wrap it with what ever covers most of the coil then use a Exact-o knife to break the clapton or wrap and then peel off to where you need it....remember you need 3" both ways

Being that I'm a sign maker I have a large collection of Xacto knives. But if we're really being honest...I love my Olfa knives! I couldn't work a single day without my Olfa AK-4

With this in mind, I'd be interested as to which Coil builds the members in this thread, do use to vape everyday. Some of the intricate builds have to vape well I imagine, so pics of them would be nice :)

This is all stuff I made to vape with and works well. When I get my batteries I'll start building much wider with more layers and frames but using fewer wraps.
Every coil posted up there will work very well on any mod that will fire down to 0.1ohm with over 100w.
Staple staggered, alien staples and staggertons are some of the most violently vaping coils you can make if you have the power to feed them...which is why mine are so small right now.

i have a ton of setups with random coil builds that i have from learning different building techniques, but most of those i only build once and barely use. i still have a set of naked staples i posted a pic of here last summer. probably only vaped them through five or six battery cycles in total. my main daily setups are mostly aliens and alien framed staples. i have a couple setups i like fused claptons in too. those things are pretty great in terms of balance between overall performance/versatility/difficulty level.

nice colors @whiteowl84

I ended up pulling the Fused Claptons upwards instead of to the sides on the Goon LP and using the Cap from the Original Goon and it was a lot better. I don't know if the build was too big, but it wasn't that great with the LP Cap. It vapes like a champ after making those changes tho, and I'll probably run it his way till I can get my hands on a Cosmonaut LOL! Fused Clapton build is .12 and the Transformers are .1

So this is my first build. I used what I had available for components because I was just itching to try something I made. Please feel absolutely free to critique or pass along suggestions. My mod is a Lavabox M and my RTA is a Smok Spiral. The coil is a 6 wrap 24g twisted Kanthal that measured at 0.235 inch. The coil metered at 0.5 ohm. Once the coil was installed and burned a couple times it metered at 0.4 ohm. My 521 Mini read it as 0.45 ohm My Lavabox shows it at 0.43 ohm. The pics were taken with my Moto X Pure.

Looking good! I like twisted in my Velocity. I like running twisted in parallel with some SS. I usually twist mine a bit tighter but, thats just me. Absolutely nothing wrong with yours. Its not as easy getting the twist real tight doing it by hand as opposed to using a drill because by the time I have sat there and twisted by hand for a few minutes and my hand goes numb from Carpal Tunnel, I end up saying fuck it, they are good enough lol

@ralph029 one of my favorite builds in my early days was basically what you posted, but then hammered flat. its called a boneyard coil. hammering it out creates gaps between the twists and changes the surface area and heating a little bit (which imo was an improvement over plain twisted in terms of the actual vape i got). 24g ka1 is (imo) the best to use for it. if you get the twist pitch to be roughly the same as your intended inner diameter it makes a cool pattern when you wrap it up too.

So my thought process on why my twists are not tighter was I thought that the loser the twists, the more surface area I would get. I did the twists with a drill (with age... wisdom). So far, I"m not really impressed with this coil. It seems to burn hot. I have my mod set up running at 35 watts. I'm vaping the same juice that I have been using a consistent 39 watts. Thanks for the input.

Now I HAVE to try hammering the wire out. That's going to have to be by hand though. If I have to go get a hydraulic press, that's going to make this little hobby pretty damn expensive :) Thanks for the input.

yeah hammer it by hand. if you google or youtube 'boneyard coil' there are a couple of really good videos. i wish it wasnt so late, i kinda want to do a boneyard variation of some kind but i cant hammer while everyone is sleeping :cuss2:

The only way I really like it is with the SS in parallel adding to the surface area. Like I did mine above.

I wanted to another vertical build for fun so this time I wanted to try fused claptons for better flavor on the Griffin 25 velocity deck. After some centering and tweezer work (just keeping both the circular shape and coils tightly together).

*Update - I was able to trim a vertical, thin piece of cotton (in sheet form) and wrapped it around the four individual wicks to create a nice little nest. :p

I also wanted to show a small fix I made to help with the leaking of the Mutation XV 4 - when I "rolled" the wick, I decided to use a wider, thicker piece of the wick and fluff it out a bit over the four posts to absorb more liquid AND it provides the added bonus of dripping right through the mouthpiece instead of removing the whole sleeve each time you want to drop.
