Question: Kanger SSOC coils, can/would you run them in SS TC mode?

Just hoping to get some perspective. I'm still chugging along with my v1 100 watt Sig mod, so all the new fangled TC stuff is out of my realm of experience. But I have an older friend who picked up a Kanger Topbox kit, and likes running the SS coil that came with it in that mod's SS TC mode.

Specifically, I'm curious if you could use the 1.5 ohm SSOC coils in SS TC mode. What are peoples' thoughts on this? From just glancing at TC stuff on this forum, I have the impression that TC coils are typically super low ohm, but I don't really know if that applies to SS, and whether there would be any issue running a 1.5 ohm SS coil in SS TC mode.

Thanks!

Ohms are too high. Doubt it would work in TC.

I disagree, after all it's the heat of the wire changing the resistance of it. Therefore it shouldn't matter, what the initial resistance of the coil is. IMO, it's mainly a matter of how good the mod's TC mode works.

The recent updates to the JTech/Wismec/Eleaf mods raise the TC ceiling to 1.5 ohms.
So it's doable. No idea where Kanger tops out.

However... you need to use TC-able wire.
Unless they've released new heads (I haven't kept track), this is the SSOCC family...

Packaging highlight and O-Ring color...

Red - NiChrome 0.15, 0.5, 1.2, 1.5
Blue - Nickel 0.15
Pink - Stainless Steel 0.5
Black - Clapton (Kanthal ?) 0.5

eta: Oops... because of poor reviews, I completely forgot that new Kanger mods claim NiChrome TC ability. So... presuming the 1.5 coil head is NiCr... try that TC mode.

It's the 1.5 ohm version of these (which can be found in the drop down box):

SS must mean Stainless Steel, certainly? :)

And thanks everyone for your input! Very helpful. I had realized that I threw some Kanger SSOC coils in along with a larger FT order I placed a while back, and it was only later on that I wondered why the hell I choose the 1.5 ohm version. lol He's tickled with the vapor production he's been getting with the included coils (new vaper). Well, sounds like it's worth the experiment to see if they're work in TC mode on his Kanger. Good to know it's a possibility at least.

Anyone happen to know if these Kanger TobBox mods are firmware upgradeable? ...probably should just get off my ass and check myself...;)

I'm sorry this is so confusing, we've been dealing with it since last fall and Kanger hasn't exactly been shouting the facts from the rooftops.

The "SS" refers to the Stainless Steel BODY of the coil head.
The packaging highlight and o-ring color denote the material of the wire used.

The Red ringed 1.5 ohm coils are NiChrome, not SS wire.
Use the appropriate TC mode, or power mode with NiCr or SS.
Not Titanium or Nickel though... use the proper TC mode ONLY with those.

Ahh, I could smack myself. Should have been obvious enough, since regardless of the wire they call them SSOCC. But ya, definitely a bit confusing.

Since I have you here, their Ni200 is nickel? And is the NiChrome just another name for Kanthal? Hence the higher ohms with these coils? Or no, it's a different type of wire (in which case I'll educate myself on the subject, no need for you to spend your time going beyond a simple yes or no).

Ni200 is Nickel (we only use "200" grade).
Ti is Titanium.
And NiChrome is NOT Kanthal, but I think we're getting into the same ballpark.

For wattage use, NiCr is older than SS. But the TCR is extremely low.
That means... the resistance rise as it heats, is very minimal, making it very difficult to TC as that's what we have to work with so far... resistance rise as temperature gauge.

SS is far lower than Nickel, and about half of Titanium. NiCr is far lower still.
It's worth trying if the mod has a NiCr TC mode, but don't expect great TC performance.

On the other hand... like SS, it can be used in wattage mode too. Dual use, eh? :)

Muchas gracias amigo! Very helpful. If only my stupid Sig 100 watt would die already, I could buy a new mod and immerse myself in this TC revolution! (I don't really mean that, I think/hope this mod will out live me! lol)

I use SS TC as much as possible (power mode when I feel like it) and it's possible that the only NiCr I've had are from a 5 pack of SSOCC Reds. It's why several of us began investigating what the wire was, last fall, when they wouldn't TC properly.

So I can't speak to the cost or value of the few mods with NiCr TC modes.

But full featured Ni/Ti/SS/TCR TC mods are so damn inexpensive this year... do eeeet.

It's very hard to find the pink SS coils - most are kanthal. Even so, I generally run SS in wattage mode, and it works wel!

They're mostly NiCh. Only the black ring Claptons are Kanthal.

I've still not found the SS heads (Pink) outside of the Kanger kits.
Bizarre... and frustrating. They're all I wanted in the first place. :p

Who's got 'em?

Even after about 18 months I'm still delighted that my Sig is working beautifully. I guess I'm still a bit "traumatized" over all the crap devices I bought in my first ~4 years of vaping.

Although, after the Pico gets a bit more time in users' hands, and if it turns out to be a solid performer, I'll probably buy a few as upgrades for some of my older friends who are still on eGo devices, and might just keep one for myself to finally see what all the TC fuss is about!

If it turns out that I decide not to be cremated when I die, it will only be so that I can be buried with my Sig! :D

Sounds like a plan... on both counts. :D

:giggle: Don't have the Kanger coil heads, nor do I have the proper SS wire for such a build. Why don't you give it a try? However, obviously, the coils in question aren't SS wire anyways.

I rebuild, don't have the heads, nor would I buy them.
