RBA Coil Master help! SOLVED!

Updated: Oh, duh, never mind - I was pressing down too hard and scrunching the coil!

So after waiting for weeks for this to arrive on backorder from RBA Supplies it finally arrived. But - what on earth is going on? This is using 28 gauge, 2mm, in the closest hole (my third attempt):

You're pressing too hard. All it needs is gentle downward pressure, or the wire wraps on top of itself rather than as a microcoil. Start twisting slowly, and let the piece you turn rest lightly on the wire to guide it.

I use it with 28g regularly and it works great. But, the first couple of tries with 28 resulted in the same situation you're getting. But, once you get the hang of it, it's wonderful for making coils.

Thanks! I realized that right after I posted but it was too late to delete!

You should be happy that they even delivered it.

I got mine last week, took only 3 days until delivered and I'm really happy with it. It's small size and simplicity saves me time making coils. I labeled each of mine with the corresponding size on scotch tape.

I wrote the sizes on the bottom of each piece with black permanent marker.

Thats a good idea. For me the scotch tape gives me some added texture for a better finger grip.

I got mine today, I'm gonna do this. I, too, did the exact same thing you posted about on my first two wraps, then figured out I was pressing too hard.

This thing makes beautiful coils effortlessly. I do wish it came with some sort of storage case, pouch, whatever. I need to find a more permanent home for mine, so I don't lose any rods.

You can find suitable pouch for it at nearest dollar store.

I just got one on eBay for $15.. I guess I gotta let off the pressure on the top cap. I've been trying for the last half hour and I'm ready to destroy this thing hah. It was easier wrapping my coils on my pin vise, but I'll try to ease up on the next attempt. Are you folks winding off the spool or are you just cutting a length of wire and doing it that way?

You have to cut the length and not apply any pressure when you wind! Once you get the hang of it it's easy :)

Received my Boom Boom a couple of days ago. Perfect coils. Only minimal adjustments after install. I would recommend this to everybody

I feel like a dope, but I can't get rid of hot legs with my beautiful coilmaster coils. I've manipulated them with tweezers, all the usual fixes, but always have a hot spot or leg. I finally just grabbed the trusty drill bit to see if I had gone incompetent, and I built a nice dual coil first go. I don't know why I'm having these issues... It sure makes a pretty contact coil, though. Gotta worry when the idiot proof tool to make things easy is beyond your capabilities...

Maybe, depending on your atty and the position you have to put your coils. try to put a "kink" or sharp bend in the legs. Kinda like, so they don't curve into the holes. But more of a direct in. But what i noticed is that you can't turn coils with gaps. Like if you were to twist them on a 4-40 screw. Only tight coils from this tool. Once i used it I now believe, variety is the spice of life. Me, like you, will probably keep twisting on screwdrivers, mandrils, allen keys and whatever is within reach. Old skool can't be beat. This thing will probably sit in my tool box and collect dust. I guess you get used to skinning your fingertips. Don't panic, at least you failed 100% of the time..........you're perfect.

Lol. Perfection! I like it. I do think I need to keep the last coil super compressed, and kink the wire like you said so it's straight into the post hole. The one with a curve is always the hot leg. Usually I can fix those things, but yeah, back to the drill bit until I feel like fiddling again.

Just came to mind. Check out this guy videos. sxmxdrifter. Some old white guy with some really good info. I haven't tried, But he claims that you can eliminate hot legs by using a slightly smaller bit that you used to wrap your coil with and, "no porn pun intended" slide the smaller bit "in and out" of your coil as your firing on your device. He has a few videos but I think the one i saw it in was about tensioned micro coils. He also has some good videos about, "with simpleton" battery calculations. Very infomative

Same old white guy happens to be the dude that came up with the idea of using a contact coil — THE microcoil, we're all using. Before then we were all winding wire around a noodle.

Good luck M.
