RiffTrax is taking on the classic product-placement movie The Wizard. The Wizard is a 1989 movie about Super Mario Bros. 3, but also has 90 minutes of a road-movie leading up to it.
In 1989, kids only cared about one thing, and that was the upcoming release of Super Mario Bros. 3. The only modern example of hype that comes close is the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but even it falls short of the anticipation that was palpable on the playgrounds and in the tree-forts of 1989 America.
To capitalize on this hype, Nintendo made a movie starring Fred Savage, who was a hot-ticket item at the time and was guaranteed to pack in fans of television and film alike. Christian Slater was also in the movie, most likely to pad-out the appeal to young women who may not have expressed interest in what was then considered a child's hobby.
