Riverdale is a new take on the Archie Comics franchise, which often calls to mind Twin Peaks or 90210 more than the classic comic strip. But Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa previewed during the 2017 winter Television Critics Association press tour that this is simply the beginning of a new media era for the Archie brand.
Calling Riverdale the "mothership," Aguirre-Sacasa discussed how there are already plans to expand the Archie universe in future years. In addition to Archie, Betty and Veronica, the new CW series introduces Josie and the Pussycats as "Riverdale's answer to Destiny's Child or Dreamgirls."
