Indeed. The ( x ) , the "x" represents the person the ( ) or "hug" is directed to.
Therefore a ((( ))) is a *big* hug. The ((( ))) being reserved for people one holds dear.
So if I did a (InMyImage) it would be a manly platonic salute sort of thing. A slap on the back hug.
But a (((jm))) is more of a "I wanna squeeze ya, babe" type of ((( ))).

Yea, it's something like a XOXO but not as sophomoric.
It's a more affectionate mode.

Regards and a squeeze of the hand. I don't know how to pctalk that...:D

It's old bulletin board talk from way back.
It's in the genre of LOL.
But LOL had better reps and lobbyists on the take so it got the ratings
where stuff like (), ((())), and other silly symbols
got kicked aside by the wiles of our commercial capitalist society.

I LMAO and ROFLMAO often at all this silly shit.
But sometimes, like Latin and Esperanto, using it comes in handy.

Unfortunately because of my memory issues, I've forgotten more about computers than I currently know. I started hacking at 9 and ran one of the biggest underground BBS systems on the West coast.

Spent 5 years on a no contact with any networked computer systems in my late teens and actually made it self imposed for many years after that because it was very difficult for me to stay away from it.

Worked as a consultant for IBM for 17 years (8 as IBM, 9 for the company they bought) and developed, supported and implemented complex distributed server systems.

Unfortunately now I can't program to save my life or support my family :( and have problems remembering things I've done earlier in the day. It's the main reason why going to see the movie "Still Alice" with my wife is such a big deal for us and we know it is going to be emotional for both of us. I'm getting anxious just thinking about it.
