Perhaps this should have gone under the "Health Concerns" thread, but........
So.....I'm at a friend's place and she's all excited about a juice she's just made. She's just getting into DIY and I've been her guinea pig on a couple of occasions. She ain't ace, but she's getting there, and she asks me tons of questions about flavors, recipes, where to get blah, blah, blah, and I've always advised to the best of my know-how. Today she thrusts a vapor pen under my nose and says "Try this!"....
So I did. It looked like pepto bismol in the carto, but I did. In my mind I'm mulling over hmm....a little fruity....a tad mediciney......probs needs a steep.....and I'm telling her how to flash steep and can't seem to shake this odd, sweetish, kind of metallic aftertaste. So I just came out and asked her what she used as sweetener, cuz it just isn't jiving with my taste buds. She whips out this HUGE bottle of no calorie sweetener and the label on the back lists "water soluble saccharin" as the second ingredient. From everything I've read, saccharin isn't safe to eat, let alone smoke, so my question is this.....do I need to plan my own funeral?

I am not up on DIY, but I have never heard any of the members here talk about using it so I would assume its a no-no

Also moving this to DIY area to get you more looks and possible help with this.

Do they even sell saccharin anymore? Anyway, actually, no, they determined that saccharin causes cancer in mice but mice have a different chemistry than humans so it was delisted as toxic in 2000. Still not sure I would want to vape it though.

Not sure, but she bought a big honkin' bottle of it at the grocery store, bragged that it was under two bucks and it would sweeten her juice for the rest of her life - or mine, as the case may be....:(
I took a pic of the label when she left the room to answer the phone, just can't figure out how to upload it.

People use sucralose generally to sweeten. If she likes to use saccharine I don't expect it's any worse than eating it. I remember it as having a funky taste though! I would be more concerned with why the juice looks milky like pepto bismo. What else is she putting in it?

I'm thinking it was something in the Lorann line with the fruity smell and taste. Those are generally darker and thicker, I used the watermelon once and it stained my wicks but man, it was good! Lol!

Sounds like she may have been using one of the Lorann bakery emulsion flavors. She could have bought it at the grocery store where she bought the sweetener. I wouldn't vape that.

Saccharine info and links to the medical studies: http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/a?dbs+hsdb:@term+@DOCNO+669 . Nearly all the info involves ingestion.

This is pretty much the only relevant part for vaping: "Carefully observe patients with inhalation exposure for the development of any systemic signs or symptoms and administer symptomatic treatment as necessary."

I tried sweet n low (saccharine) in my coffee once. Never again, no way in hell would I ever consider vaping that stuff, even in tiny amounts.

Did a bit of sleuthing and found a few articles about workers who sued the industry claiming that inhaling the saccharine caused their lung cancer. One of them was also a smoker, so it's unclear. If you google...inhalation risks saccharine...you'll get a slew of info.

The aftertaste was awful! Like I'd been sucking on a nickel or something, I can't imagine vaping more than the one hit I had.... I called her and told her to stop using it till I could get a little more info. I usually buy a sweetener from the vendors where I get my flavors - or use a few drops of cotton candy. I was mainly concerned with her using it for all her DIY's, just something about it didn't sound (or taste) safe.
All input is appreciated!
