Saftey question on sub ohm

My friend gave me a box of his old vape stuff. I was building a kayfun with small 1.6 ohm coils. I found a premade coil with a thicker gauge of wire wrapped with a much larger diameter and decided to try it out. My variable mod reports it at 0.8 ohms. It seems to work great, but as I am new to this I wanted to post my build in case I am doing something unsafe, the last thing I want is a battery exploding in my face.

Tank: Kayfun
Mod: Fuchai-200w
Batteries: 2 different brands of IMR18650 3.7V 3000MAH 35A
Coil: Reports in at 0.8 ohms
Wattage range I usually vape at: 18.5 - 20

Considering that the mod goes all the way to 200W and that I am only at 20W I am guessing that everything should be fine, but I figured I would ask more experienced people just to make sure I'm not doing anything dumb.

You're using two different types of batteries in your Fuchai?uploadfromtaptalk1452135013794.png

For using a dual 18650.. I recommend using two of the same batteries.. Both purchased at the same time and "married" which means they both go on charge at the same time and are put in the mod at the same time. Always together. If you're doing all this already with your mod and tank.. Then you should be fine. You're way below your amp limit and your mod has some built in safety features.. Which I wouldn't recommend relying too much on.

Good to know, I'll throw these out and get new ones. Thanks for the advice.
No problem. Don't necessarily have to toss em if they're good. What kind are they exactly? If you get a single 18650 mod in the future, they'll serve a great purpose. For batteries, check LiionWholesale for LG HG2's.. They have a good mAh, but most likely out of stock.. If so, look for the Samsung 25r.. Those are good as well. A local B&M will charge you double if not more for batteries purchased there. Any other question let me know :)

Good idea - and don't get anything advertised as 35 amps, because they're fakes anyway. Stick with Samsung 25r, LG HE2, HE4, or HB6 and you'll be fine. I like having a dedicated ohm meter to test builds rather than just using a mod's on-board meter - checking the coil twice keeps the meters honest, if you will. But the battery issue is really the only big problem I see with this setup.

I trust my good old multimeter. I think it's because I feel ohm meters can be off if your batteries in them gets low But I'm just that way. Either or are a definite MUST for sub-ohming. I'm happy to see you've taken the time to check that what you're using is safe rather than jumping into it and hurting yourself.

You got my attention with this one. I have had good service with Efest 18650's that say 2900 mah and 35 amps discharge current. So I need to be concerned with these?

One is an Impren, the other is a MXJO. I do have a single battery mod that I can use them in, a Tesla 80w, but I rarely use it because its design allows it to go off when I rest it on my desk wrong, or if I put it in my pocket without locking it.

At the bottom of that thread there's a graphic with some extensive testing from @Mooch, generally regarded as the battery guru of the e-cig world. I'm not seeing those specific batteries listed, I believe @Jon@LiionWholesale tested them and they turned out okay.

Still, there's no such thing as a 35 amp continuous discharge 18650. The best (and there are only a few) go to 30A, most of what we're using are rated for 20A. The bigger concern is that Efest is a re-wrapper, they buy "seconds" that didn't pass QC with the original manufacturer, pull some fake specs out of thin air, and print those on the wrapper. There was an instance recently where they were passing off 10A batteries as 35A - that could be downright dangerous.

For that reason, and because fake batteries usually cost more than legit, QC-checked manufacturer cells (Sony, LG, Samsung), I never recommend them to anyone.

Still not legit manufacturer cells, but they have their fans. I'd keep using them while monitoring to make sure temp doesn't get out of control, but when it comes time to replace them I'd switch suppliers.

I've still got a few purple Efests from before I learned better, but these days they live in my flashlights...

Imren are decent cells. But like OBDave stated, don't ever rely on the max amp discharge rate. There's some stickies around the forums about testing done. Think it's a thread by Mooch in the Battery Junkies sub-forum. Good to read up on. Also.. Going to edit this part since I had a different mod in mind when you said Tesla 80w for some reason.. Call it a brain fart. About your Tesla switch.. How exactly is it autofiring on your desk?

Thank you very much for this info. I use single cell mods so should be ok.

With the tesla if you put it button side down, the weight of it is enough to push the button. Usually happens when something distracts me like the doorbell or my phone ringing in the other room, I put it down without thinking and then come back to a coil that needs to be rebuilt. The button fires really easily, I have had mods autofire in my pocket before, but it was really rare. With the tesla it will happen everytime I put it in my pocket without locking it.

Oh that's just about always keeping your mind on your sensitive button. I've had plenty of mechanicals that auto fire in my pocket. With certain mods, you just need to lock them really quick or turn them off before putting it in your pocket. I can see how that can get you aggro tho
