We all know the drill by now. With its latest hiatus looming Saga seeks to both wrap up and entice, Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughan resolving old threads even as they tease new ones. The resulting issue doesn’t stand out as one of Saga’s wilder finales, far from it, but it does provide enough emotional complexity and surprising reveals to leave us itching for more.

With so much of last issue dedicated to blowing our brains with “did-that-really-just-happen” mind bogglers, writer Vaughan uses this issue to sweep up the resulting debris. It’s a decision that works to varying degrees, as the resolution of some storylines almost negates the trials of others. The forced separation of Marko and Alana was initially devastating, but it allowed Vaughan to really hone into their strengths and weaknesses as individuals. Considering the prolonged bit of self discovery each endured, their reunion feels almost abrupt by comparison, especially so given the equally quick plot wrinkle suffered literally minutes before. Vaughan handles said reunion beautifully in terms of tone and self actualization, but in regards to the overall narrative it doesn’t quite hit the mark.
