NBCUniversal is looking to revive the Shrek franchise and churn out "as many as four animated movies a year," the company's CEO Steve Burke told investors today.

Creating popular characters is the ultimate goal—leading to licensed merchandise and theme parks attractions, Deadline reports. NBCUniversal intends to take "the low-single digit returns of the movie business and turn it into a different kind of business."

Comcast division NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion in April. This put Illumination Entertainment's Chris Meledandri—who served as producer on the Despicable Me films—in charge of the company's creative vision. "He is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek and take a lot of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises."
