Full spoilers ahead for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins!

Arguably the most iconic of G.I. Joe characters, Snakes Eyes’ solo film has finally arrived to reboot the long-running Paramount/Hasbro movie franchise. Let’s break down how the ending of this origin story establishes the future of the big screen feud between archenemies G.I. Joe and Cobra!

After the defeat of Kenta (Takehiro Hira), Tommy Arashikage (Andrew Koji) is informed by his grandmother (Eri Ishida) that he will not become the next leader of the Arashikage clan because he broke the family’s rule about never wielding the power of the Jewel of the Sun. His pride wounded after a lifetime of waiting for his moment to ascend to a leadership role, Tommy refuses to act in any type of servile role, instead laying down his Arashikage signet ring and walking away from his family.

Feeling the weight of responsibility for his role in what led to Tommy cutting ties with his family, Snake (Henry Golding) vows to find him and make things right with his blood brother. (This despite Tommy vowing to kill Snake should they ever cross paths again.) That’s when Snake receives a double whammy of information that reveals key information about his past while also hinting at what may lie ahead for the G.I. Joe movie franchise.

G.I. Joe member Scarlett (Samara Weaving) informs Snake that his late dad — whose execution at the beginning of the film sets up Snake’s lifelong quest for vengeance against his killers — was actually a member of the Joes.

Cleared by General Joe Colton — the original G.I. Joe of franchise lore (previously played by Bruce Willis in G.I. Joe: Retribution) — to reveal this classified information, Scarlett provides Snake with a file that reveals Snake’s late dad’s service record and reveals his dad died while serving undercover to infiltrate Cobra. He gave his life to stop this terrorist group and Scarlett says the Joes have been waiting a long time for someone to fill his shoes. Maybe Snake will be the one to do that. Snake doesn’t commit to joining them yet, though, as he needs to deal with Tommy first.

The Arashikage clan bestows on Snake one last gift before he leaves to track down Tommy: a battle suit of black armor complete with the iconic Snake Eyes mask (which is designed more as a helmet here) complete with the notable red Arashikage clan marking on the arm sleeve. Much like how Daniel Craig’s 007 utters “Bond, James Bond” at the very end of Casino Royale, this is the Snake Eyes Begins moment of the film.

Snake Eyes Mid-Credits Scene

In the end credits scene of Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, Tommy Arashikage, dressed in his character’s signature mostly white garb, is aboard a private jet fleeing Japan. But guess who’s the flight attendant serving him a bottle of Johnnie Walker before takeoff? Why, none other than the Baroness (Úrsula Corberó)!

The Baroness — having fought alongside Tommy’s family in the last act of the movie in a brief alliance struck with Scarlett — offers Tommy a job with Cobra. He serves no one, he reiterates, but the implication is that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Snake and the Arashikage are aligned with the Joes so Tommy now finds himself allied with the very people who previously tried to rob the Jewel of the Sun from the Arashikage.

At the end of the mid-credits scene, Tommy informs Baroness he’s no longer to be referred to by his birth name. Instead, “call me … Storm Shadow.” This calls back to a scene earlier in the movie where Akiko (Haruka Abe) observes that Tommy has the same look on his face before trouble goes down — “a shadow before the storm,” she calls it — that she’s seen before.

So there we have it. Snake Eyes: G. I. Joe Origins ends with Snake in his iconic outfit but not yet a member of the Joes and Storm Shadow making his pact to become an ally of Cobra Command. Should there be a Snake Eyes sequel it seems obvious that Snake’s pursuit to make amends with Tommy will lead to a larger conflict involving the Joes and Cobra, with each blood brother further committing to their respective allies.
