Buried in the depths of Snow White with the Red Hair’s first episode are elements of an interesting story and strong characters—but in this initial introduction to protagonist Shirayuki and her flight from her home country, none of that potential ever fully makes it to the surface.
It’s a surprise and a disappointment, particularly because the studio in charge of this series (Bones) was also behind Ouran High School Host Club. While the art style of the forest scenes and the overall animation quality in “Encounter…Changing the Color of Fate” are excellent—the former is particularly striking due to a broad array of bright colors and an almost muted Disney fairy tale-like vibe—this opening episode lacks Ouran’s fluid dialog and superb pacing.
