So I see lots of VTC3's, 4's, and 5's all over the market and on reputable sites. My question is this what are we getting when we buy these batteries and has anyone tested them as of late?

This is a response from Sony about their 18650 batteries from September 8th, 2015

"Thank you for your inquiry.

The 18650(VTC) type batteries are no longer manufactured by Sony.

This product was never intended for individual, public sale and are not eligible for warranty or engineering support. It was only available to OEM makers of specific devices.

The specifications and markings on the battery may vary depending upon the OEM’s requirements. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the true manufacturer or authenticity of the batteries without physical inspection and manufacturing code research.

This type of battery seems to be widely available on the internet market through non-authorized resellers. Therefore, Sony is not liable for the performance or use of this type battery for non-intended purposes. Such applications should be done at the user’s own risk. Furthermore, any battery of this type claimed to be Sony brand may be older stock. We apologize that we cannot offer further assistance with this matter. Sincerely, Sony"

So apparently Sony isn't even making 18650's for OEM's anymore (tech manufacturers making laptops, tablets, etc.) so Sony claims what we are buying is either old stock of these batteries OR BLATANT copies which can not be safe.

*EDIT*

I JUST SPOKE WITH SOMEONE REPRESENTING SONY AND IT TURNS OUT THEY DO STILL MANUFACTURE THESE BATTERIES THEY JUST DON'T SELL THEM IN LOOSE FORMAT (ie to vapers for liability reasons) SO THEY ARE REAL THEY JUST DON'T PROMOTE OR ENCOURAGE USE

The statements put out by Sony's legal staff to distance themselves from any possibility of legal claims from the vape world have led to a lot of confusion. I know Jon over at Li-ion Wholesale and I'm sure other reputable suppliers as well have tested to make sure what they are offering are legitimate given the number of fakes out there. I think with any li-ion cell it's important to purchase from someone you trust.

I agree actually not just for batteries, but everything in vaping. The only thing I hate about vaping is the clones and fakes. People can't trust the vape industry right now.. when I was new to vaping I got burned by a brick and mortar selling me a clone as an authentic..and I know plenty of people with the same story. It's really a shame, but I guess thats just how it is when you deal with a new segment of the market plus people who only care about money (both the consumers and the suppliers)
