The previous Darth Vader story arc showcased the Dark Lord of the Sith in all his glory as he waged war on the hellish mining world of Shu-Toran. Having pacified the Empire's enemies, Vader is ready for the next chapter in his post-Episode IV career. While Vader fans might not appreciate this very talky new issue, Darth Vader #20 does set some very interesting wheels in motion for the series.

Kieron Gillen seizes the opportunity to write Emperor Palpatine in this issue, crafting what is easily the most lengthy sequence between master and apprentice since this series began. Gillen succeeds in shedding light on the relationship between these two iconic villains at this specific point in their partnership. Palpatine's grand plans for the galaxy are illuminated, as is his place (as he sees it) in the larger tapestry of the Jedi/Sith conflict. What really makes this sequence work is the fact that readers are never quite sure how to interpret Palpatine's interaction with Vader. Is there any part of Palpatine that considers Vader to be a worthy partner in his plans for the galaxy, or is he simply a tool to be manipulated like any other?
