J.J. Abrams could not pass up the opportunity to end the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
In an interview with Rolling Stone Abrams, who took over for Colin Trevorrow as the director of the yet untitled Episode IX earlier this year, revealed he had no intention of coming back to the franchise. However, Abrams ultimately couldn't decline the chance to finish the story he helped start in The Force Awakens.
"When the opportunity presented itself to finish a story that we had begun with these new characters, to tell the last chapter of their story, it felt like there was a chance to do it in a way where we could go beyond, and do better than we did in Seven," Abrams said.
