Valve’s Steam Controller has seen numerous revisions since I first saw a 3D-printed mock-up at the Game Developers Conference several years ago -- and now we finally have the finished product in our hands.

The controller itself is a good size, albeit a bit larger than the Xbox 360 controller I currently use to play games on my PC. It’s comfortable to hold and its button placement is logical; I don’t have to stretch my thumbs in order to reach the thumb stick or buttons.

From its conception, Valve has been adamant about including dual touchpads, which allows the controller to take advantage of all types of PC games. One unique thing about the dual touchpads is that they provide haptic feedback, which reminds me of an old iPod click wheel. The motors provide different intensities of buzzing based on how quickly you’re swiping your thumb across the pad. The touchpads definitely require some getting used to for aiming and looking around since I’m used to using dual thumb sticks.
