Hello Vaping People. :)

I am still very new at this whole vaping. I have been doing it now for about 4 months and haven't touched a smoke and dropped down to less then 3% nicotine and sometimes I vape at 0. ( very proud of myself)

I have a question, I bought my 2nd kit yesterday. I picked up the Kangertech Subox mini. I saw one of the coily things I think they are called atomizers? Was made for building your own coil. So I gave it a shot after watching alot of videos. So my Battery was saying I was vaping at .03 Ohms at 50W. The vaper was super hot. Almost to hot. Any Ideas why? Still don't fully understand everything about vaping. Each day I'm trying to learn. Anyhelp would be amazing. I love the look of large clouds if that helps.

Most likely 0.3, not .03! Go here and plug in your wire gauge, mandrel size and you'll see how many wraps you need to make your vape less hot: http://www.steam-engine.org/coil.asp?

Yes I did mean 0.3. So From what I understand its very hot because the coils are to closed together? When I put the watts down it's the same thing. Very warm. Almost like I am inhaling coffee...

It's hot because it's 0.3! Make a new coil between 0.5 and 1.0 ohm and you'll see the difference.

okay, Because I have a subox mini, With prebuilt ones that are set at .5ohms. I guess I wanted to try to get more vaper. So More vaper lower ohms = hotter vaper? I'm sorry If it's a dumb question. Just trying to fully understand everything.

Yes, lower ohms hotter vape (not necessarily more vapor)!

OH! Okay, I think Im starting to understand. Lower ohms will be hotter is normal. Okay. Just making sure. lol. So I should focus on building it about .4 ohms or a bit higher.
Thanks for the help guys Still learning :)

Even at .3ohms though you should be able to turn down the wattage to where it's not so hot... but yeah, try a higher build and then come back with results lol

So, I think im going to stay away from Coil building for abit.. I had no Idea what I was doing. I coil ended up being at .3ohms But kept jumping around up to 1.3 ohms. (The battery was saying that) I believe it was a short once I put the chimney on. I fixed that issue by removing the chimney for testing then I tested fired the new coil with E juice on for 4 seconds... Cotton caught fire... So I added alot more ejuice. 4 second fire.....caught fire. So I think if I want to keep the roof over my head I should stay as far away from coil building as possible. lol

So If I should keep going with this and have a possible house fire... It reason why to build them is because it saves money on the prebuilts which are about 20$ for a pack of 5-6 here In Montreal. Am I correct?

yes this reason
and to customize your vape experience. Different coils can taste different act different. Wicking differently can change the experience too. Keep experimenting

Great thanks!

Can I use any type of wire that I pick up at a hardware store? Or does it have to be a certain type? Again I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. Google is not answering these questions haha.

you should for now buy your wire form vape stores online or BandM

You want kanthal 26 or 28 ga for the most part at this point to experiment with. Nickel and Titanium is for temp control mods only.
Stainless steel is fine as well for you
And I m new to coil building as well but I believe there is a wire call Nichrome you can try

Correct... money is the main reason people switched over, but another is a lot of people say that home-built coils allow for better taste then prebuilt. Also, there's so many different ways to wrap your own coil to your liking.

Here's my advice on coiling: In my Subtank Mini I use 24g kanthal for a total of 6-8 wraps around a 3mm screwdriver. So in this case, take your kanthal and put one end up on the handle (close to the shaft so to speak) and pinch that with your thumb. with your other hand start wrapping the kanthal around the "shaft" of the screwdriver trying to keep each wrap as close to the last one as possible but NEVER overlapping. (Overlapping will cause a short) Count 6-8 wraps. Straighten out the legs of the coil and install in the Subtank while still on the screwdriver (allows for extra support and keeps the coil from getting messed up when moving legs around to situate under screws) and tighten legs down under the screws. Keep the coil low to the deck, pretty much right over the air hole. Clip the extra kanthal hanging out of the screws. At this point you need to make sure NONE of the kanthal is touching anything metal other than the screws and the posts where the screw tightens it down at. Now is when you turn up your watts to around 30 (maybe 35 if it doesn't heat quick enough) and press the fire button in 1 second intervals until the coil gets red hot. When this happens RELEASE the fire button and take a pair of pliers and gently pinch the coil together and repeat this process until the coils heat from the inside out and don't have any spots that get red hot before the rest of the coil. (Touching the coils with metal will cause a short when holding the fire button) You should end up with a reading of around .5-.6ohms. Then take a skinny piece of cotton or other wicking material and run it through your coil. Cut the ends of the wicking material at a very sharp angle making the ends skinnier. Take a little bit of juice and wet the wicking material to make it more workable. Put just a very very small amount of cotton (the tips) into the juice channels and make sure there is cotton sitting on top of the channels to block the juice from just flowing in. Put it all back together, fill up, and you should only need about 20-25 watts to get a satisfying vape! However I would suggest starting around 15 and working your way up until you find that sweet spot for your juice and your liking!

Good Luck Brotha!

Amazing! Thank you everyone. Im going to buy more wire on Friday. I was using the wire that came with the unit. Ran out lol.
So From what I've been reading best to get kanthal 28gauge Is best to just start off with?

And sterile cotton balls.

UPDATE:

I Made about 19 coils in the past 2 hours or so trying to get it right. 0 fires YAY!

From what I am able to gather Higher watt + Lower ohms = warm vape (Do not enjoy)
So I am trying to build a higher ohm coil currently. However when I do My Ohm display keeps jumping around when I fire it for a sec to see if it burns from the middle out. Then it will not fire again for about 7 minutes. or so. I am thinking this is due to the heat of the coil but can be wrong.

Maybe try a thinner gauge wire. Easier to build a higher ohm, IME. I'm no pro, just works for me.

Now Im getting a little frustrated. Every single coil I build. I put it at 20-30 W Its Extremely hot. I don't understand. I have 26 gauge wire Current build its at .9 ohms. My prebuilts are .5 ohms and are nice. No heat at all. That's what I enjoy no heat. I don't know what i am doing wrong. I have 30 feet of wire and I used about 6 feet already. My desk is like a grave yard of coils. lol

with a .9ohm build, lower your watts even lower than 20. just start low like 10w on every new build you make and work your way up, so you can see what happens along the way...

So its normal for it to be hot and it will cool down?
What I am trying to get is like my prebuilt ones its not hot at all even at 50W. It gets warm with alot of vaper.

Are you using the contact coil method? If so then yes... contact coils get a lot hotter than spaced coils. Normally your first pull will be cooler than the next couple if you chain vape

Yes I chain vape (Trying to quit smoking :D ) All my coils are touching So I should space them so It will be cooler?

Are you getting a good connection between the tank and mod? I got a bad subtank mini rba deck and I replaced it and all was gravy. Are your ohms jumping around?

Yes my ohms are jumping around every so often when I build a new one But I think that is because something was touching the chimney. now it seems to be steady on .9 ohms

When I started building I went through coil after coil troubleshooting and finding a sweet spot that I enjoy. My subtank build is a 28 gauge parallel with 6 wraps at 0.3 ohms at 24 watts. Check your decks to make sure they don't move when you jiggle them. Make sure your screws are tight. Start at 15 watts and go up until you find a vape temperature you like.

I am trying to make another coil where it does not touch, But wouldn't that make the ohm lower which will make it hotter? This is confusing. lol:confused:

You have a vv/vw device, you could technically make a .2ohm coil seem cool just by lowering the wattage... like I said, any coil you make, start the ohms low and work your way up until you find that sweet spot.
