Hey guys. Been doing diy since late October but have yet to try making a recipe that is mine. To this point I have made recipes I have found here and other various sites. I am going to be attempting to come up with my own recipe soon, and am looking for suggestions. I will be going for a rum cake recipe (inspired by vigilante vapors skull and cross bones), perhaps even make it a la mode. What I plan on working with is Jamaican rum (FA)
Yellow cake (FW)
Brown sugar (TFA)
And maybe vanilla cupcake and butter , both TFA

I need a vanilla extract type flavor, was wondering if anyone had suggestions how to achieve that and also, maybe just general tips on how to make a good cake flavor, as I know this is somewhat ambitious for my 1st attempt.

Thanks in advance guys !

FA's Classic Vanilla taste like a vanilla extract to me. FA's Vanilla bourbon is very good too though less extract like I think. And Caps has a good Cake Batter flavor (but it's STRONG AND SWEET imo).

If you have that Vanilla Cupcake TFA already I would try working with that. Or if you have it try some Caps Vanilla Custard in there(I'd keep it low though, below 5%)

But try whatever you like! No one knows your tastebuds better than you!

Im in total agreement with this . I think you have all the makings of it right there in front of you. You have to remember also that .5% here and .5% there can make a big difference and change the overall taste of a recipie. Just go for it !! Good luck.

The cake batter is one that can over take I tend to keep it at 1-2%.
The brown sugar is is reg or extra? another 1-2% can gunk your coils up wicked fast and do a hostile take over of flavor.

The cake batter I don't have, unfortunately. That was another members suggestion. Got caught up watching my Colts play (bring it on patriots!) so will be settling in to get started in just a bit! I'm thinking

FA yellow cake
FA Jamaican rum
TFA brown sugar Extra
TFA vanilla cupcake
And some combination of vanillas/creams to add creaminess (fresh cream maybe? This will be for depth and creaminess, as rum cake is very moist)
Maybe marshmallow? Marshmallow seems to really add moistness to recipes

Also have a cakestone recipe I may make up to use for the cake portion

Oh yeah, probably a little bit of sweetener, TFA sucralose sweetener probably, since rum cake is pretty sweet,

Ok. Getting ready to do my 1st 100 drop test. Going to go with this cake stone...
FW yellow cake 30%
TFA vanilla cupcake 30%
TFA bavarian cream 10%
TFA marshmallow 15%
10% ethyl maltol 15%

This gives me a realistic cake flavor that is moist (marshmallow) and has the vanilla needed for a rum cake.

1st run...
Cake stone @ 5%
FA jamaican rum @ 1.5%
TFA brown sugar extra @ .5%
TFA french vanilla @ 2%

Will update when it's mixed and tested

Update :

Awful...lol. Taste no rum, flavor is weak in general and that's a good thing because what I can taste is what I imagine inhaling burning styrofoam would taste like. Odd considering my low percentage starting points and seemingly innocent flavor combos. Back to drawing board!

I found the culprit!! My ecigexpress ordered FA jamaican rum is mislabeled. It is not rum. It is Vienna cream I think. Has that same eggnog type smell/flavor. Well shit

Thats why I love original packaging. A lot less chance of getting the wrong flavor. Hope you can get this sorted out to a version you enjoy.

not all is wasted ,a lot of good recipes you can do with Vienna cream,a lot of HIC's use it.It's sucks they labeled it wrong though.
And if you're trying to concoct your own recipes this won't be the last time you come up with something that doesn't taste right,I've made several that tasted like burnt shoe leather.Don't give up, you'll nail the flavor you're going for with a little tweaking, and % changes.Experimenting with your flavors is what I love most about DIY.

Hey Darth!

I just checked out our entire stock of both Vienna Cream & Jamaican Rum, and can confirm that they are properly labeled. I did note however that the flavors have a strikingly similar smell. Let me know if this helps!

Just pulled both bottles, and you're correct in smelling amazing close together, almost identical.
They almost taste the same,to me the rum has a sweeter "bite" to it.
Also noticed that the Vienna cream is clear and the Rum is very dark colored, that may help identify if it is mislabeled.
