I'm kinda new to DIY but I would say yes, they are different. The supermarket sweetener is probably diluted in water. The main 2 sweeteners for eliquid is ethyl maltol and sucralose both of which are diluted in pg or vg. Other more experienced experts can give you more insight on this.
Grocery store sweeteners (of which I believe you'll find only Stevia and Sucralose often masked by trade names) contain additives inappropriate for our use. Sweeteners for mixing e-liquids will contain only the sweetening chemical along with carriers common to e-liquids: glycerin (VG), PG or water and are best purchased from a legitimate supplier of e-liquid flavorings.
The issue of whether sweeteners are beneficial is a can of worms which, once opened, will require a larger container in order to re-can them.

I can't mix with or vape store bought juice that has stevia/sucrolose in it any more. All I taste is that chemical flavor. I know it as soon as it hits my tongue and it turns me off the juice immediately.
Try substituting FA Marshmallow or FA Joy or a number of other flavors that work way better as a sweetener.
One on One has a sweetner that I use sometimes, usually in a fruit mix if the other substitutes don't get the result I want and I have no idea what it is but its not stevia/sucrolose or anything that tastes chemically.

Here;s an idea. Just browse through the Recipes thread. That'll usually fill out an order for flavorings. Then just add sweetener!
