I remember a long, long time ago, I found out my hero was coming to town. Batman! This was the Adam West variation, of course, long after original episodes of the 1960s show had gone off the air. But I guess West and his Robin, Burt Ward, still did tours back in those halcyon days of syndication, bringing the batmobile to car shows and malls and such. In full costume, no less!
I was so psyched to get to meet Batman and to see the batmobile in person (the TV show version remains to this day one of my favorite pieces of tech ever). And mind you, I didn’t really think of Batman as Adam West back then. This was the Caped Crusader I was meeting!
Only, I didn’t. When my family got to the car show, or whatever it was -- who can really remember at this point? -- where West and Ward were supposed to greet the fans, we were told that Batman couldn’t make it because he was “out getting the batmobile washed.” (Yeah, the car wasn’t there either.) Crushing disappointment. This was not the Dynamic Duo’s finest hour.
