When it comes to video game movie adaptations, Angry Birds doesn't exactly strike one as ripe with potential. Although Rovio's series of puzzlers have been wildly popular on mobile, none of them have had much of a story or mythos. That's not to mention the general stigma with all video game movies, which is longstanding. That said, The Angry Birds Movie (helmed by animation vets Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly in their directorial debuts) has the distinct advantage of taking its popular icons and doing pretty much whatever they want with them, and the end result is a fun, offbeat and vibrant animated comedy.
If you're one of the few people who never downloaded Angry Birds, the game's premise is delightfully simple: Flightless, multicolored birds slingshot themselves into pigs' fortresses so they can retrieve their stolen eggs. For the movie, that idea is fleshed out even more and tells the story of how those birds got to be so angry in the first place.
