ABC's new serialized drama, The Family, starring Joan Allen and Alison Pill, is a cross between a political drama and murder mystery. It all centers around a young boy named Adam (Liam James) who disappeared 10 years ago, was presumed dead, and suddenly resurfaces in this pilot.
At its core, the show, which debuts Thursday night on ABC, is about familial relationships and what the supposed death of a child does to those bonds. Between the surviving mother (Allen), father (Rupert Graves), son (Zach Gilford) and daughter (Pill), showrunner Jenna Bans is able to explore all sides of that breakdown and how each member handles their darkness throughout a decade. The problem is that that's an awful lot of darkness to cram into one little pilot, with none of the characters -- including the returned son -- coming off as likeable.
