Let's get this out of the way right off the bat. "Duet" is going to be a very "your mileage will vary" kind of Flash episode. If you absolutely detest musicals in all shapes and forms, this episode won't do much to win you over. But if you love seeing your favorite heroes breaking out in song and dance, or at least enjoy the idea of Barry Allen and Kara Danvers being trapped in a prison they have to sing their way out of, then "Duet" is a thoroughly entertaining way to spend an hour. For my money, it's the best episode we've gotten in a rocky season of The Flash.
This is hardly the first time a popular show has gone the musical route, with "Duet" owing a particular debt of gratitude to the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode "Mayhem of the Music Meister!". As in that animated series, the Music Meister (here played by Darren Criss) showed up to torment a few heroes with his hypnotic powers, forcing Barry and Kara to act out an elaborate musical, complete with period costumes and accents and rival crime families shooting each other in the streets. It was all very surreal, and a terrifically fun diversion from all the doom and gloom the series has been embroiled in for most of 2017. There's a lot to be said for giving viewers a break and focusing more on entertainment than drama.
