The Gifted: Season 1 Finale Review

The Gifted had a lot of potential going into the two-part Season 1 finale, but instead of leaning into its strengths, we were given a display of some of the show’s biggest weaknesses. There were a few moments that were quite excellent, but they weren’t enough to send the first season of this X-Men show out on a strong note.

Author’s Note: this is a review for both episodes “eXtraction” and “X-Roads” that comprised the two-hour finale.

Warning: full spoilers ahead!

The main problem with the finale is that it reused too many elements from previous episodes. Ambushing a convoy, interrogating a human for information, Esme getting pissed her plan didn’t work - we’ve seen it all before. We’re always expecting a little something extra in the finale, to see the big stuff they’ve been saving the whole season, but all the new and consequential material didn’t come until the last 20 minutes or so. It felt like the show was treading water until it could set off all of the fireworks, metaphorical and literal, at the end. Those last 20 minutes were incredibly powerful, but did we really need another fruitless mission, a fresh round of debate, and a visit from mama Strucker to get there?
