The War of the Worlds radio broadcast was a 1938 Halloween Eve adaptation of H.G. Wells's novel, presented by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on the Air. The broadcast's realistic, news-style format caused widespread panic among listeners who believed an actual Martian invasion was happening, with some fleeing their homes and flooding emergency services. The event brought Welles national attention and led to him starring in the movie Citizen Kane.

I remember it well. I looked forward to the Great Pumpkin and A Charlie Brown Christmas every year (and let's not forget my favorite, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!). It made those long, dark days a lot more bearable.
