The clunking of Dr. Tom's shoes on the hardwood hallway floor was always a "doom alert" to us sick kids. Then the bedroom door would open... He'd walk in, all cheery and happy, and say, "How are we all feeling today?" As if he didn't know. Then he'd stick that popsicle stick down our throats, then take our temp, then "prescribe" red cough syrup as the cure. After antibiotics became commonplace, he started prescribing tetracycline. Sometimes, we got penicillin shots, but we had to go in to the office for Nurse Judy to perform THAT torture.
Then daddy would hand him a 20 and the bill was paid.

I did go uphill both ways. We lived on one hill and the school was on a different hill. Down then up to get to school and down then up to get home.

Haha, my new shade was always "red." I vividly remember when Coppertone came out - my mom slathered that stuff on me every day, not that it did any good.
I remember it well, although I wish I didn't.
